Trolls are aggressive creatures found in Black Forests. They are massive, bumbling humanoids with brutish limbs and wiry blonde hair. They may spawn with a large tree trunk in their hand.

Attacks and abilities[]

For strategies for defeating Trolls, see Aggressive creature strategies § Troll.
  • Among the largest enemies in Valheim, Trolls have a physical strength that reflects their size. Ranged attacks with a Bow or Spear are best and kiting a Troll through dense areas of the forest is very effective, as they have large hitboxes that hinder their pathfinding.
  • Trolls employ massive yet slow attacks that are easy to avoid but very hard to block and parry. Using a Bone Tower Shield is effective at blocking most of its attacks, provided the player has sufficient health.
    • "Pulling" the attention of a Troll and brandishing a tower shield while other players fire arrow volleys is an effective strategy.
  • Trolls will sometimes fall into deep ditches or pits, or more often, the large pit at a copper dig site. Their poor pathfinding often renders them stuck.
    • If a Troll approaches a ditch that is sufficiently deep (at least 6 meters) and does not fall in, it will not willingly walk in. Unable to reach the player, it will stand still, glowering into the pit. After a few moments, it will turn its aggression towards any player structures it can reach.
    • Alternatively, if the positions are reversed, standing atop the ledge of a pit allows for easy dispatch with arrows and spears.
  • Trolls can spawn with or without a tree trunk in their hand. A Troll equipped with a tree trunk has decidedly better range and destructive power than one that is not.

Notes[]

  • A one-star troll has a pale green tint and a two-star troll is tinted a ruddy red.
  • They are tall (7 meters) and can move along corridors 2 meters and wider.
  • The curative pollen ejected by Greydwarf Shamans also heals Trolls, as they share a Faction.
  • They cannot jump or swim, but they will walk along the bottom of shallow water, sometimes getting a considerable distance from the shore. They can walk through shallow water faster than a player can swim.
  • All of the Troll's attacks (except its rock throw) have a tool tier of 2, which allows players to use trolls to harvest resources they are otherwise unable to attain at their current equipment level. Trolls are capable of knocking down and breaking apart Oak and Birch trees with their attacks, which is especially useful in the early game for obtaining Fine wood without a Bronze axe (or better). Trolls can also break Copper and Tin deposits (even with their rock throw attacks), which can allow the player to get Bronze before killing the first boss, Eikthyr.
    • Additionally, Trolls lured into more hostile biomes will aggressively attack most creatures in that biome, due to them having different Factions. While Trolls are not such a good match for stronger enemies, such as Plains creatures, they are capable of destroying large numbers of Swamp creatures, leaving loot like Entrails and Bloodbags in their wake for the player to collect

Trivia[]

  • In Old Norse sources, trolls were assimilated to Jötnar, the giants from Norse mythology. Only in later Scandinavian folklore did they appear as separate beings.
  • All trolls had green skin in the alpha build.[1]
