Serpents are aggressive creatures found in Oceans, and currently the only hostile creature spawning in Oceans. They are large, aquatic snake-like reptilian creatures with six glowing eyes, spiked dorsal fins and a gaping mouth filled with razor-sharp teeth.

Serpents are hunted primarily for their meat, which can be used in mid-late game food.

Notes

  • A Raft is generally too slow and too fragile for a solo player to survive a serpent attack. Because of serpent attacks, the minimum recommended setup for ocean exploration is a Karve with at least a Finewood bow.
  • Only the serpents that are spawned in rainy conditions can be held in captivity. Serpents that spawn at night will despawn during the day.
  • Serpents will attempt to flee back into the ocean if dragged inland.
  • Serpent meat floats, but all other drops do not. Killing a serpent in deep water will result in the drops sinking to the bottom of the ocean and there is currently no way to dive to retrieve them. Therefore, an Abyssal harpoon can be used to drag the serpent to shallow water or even on land before it is killed, to collect the drops.

Trivia

  • The Serpent is likely based on Jörmungandr from Norse mythology, the giant sea serpent that roams the waters of Midgard.
  • Upon release, serpent meat could be cooked on a cooking station. Now, the Iron cooking station is required to cook serpent meat.
