Leviathans are passive creatures found in Oceans. They are massive rock-type beings that have a 10% chance of submerging each time their Abyssal barnacles are damaged.

Leviathans themselves are immovable and indestructible; only the barnacles on their back can be destroyed by mining them.

Drops[]

Each Abyssal barnacle drops the following when mined:

Item 0 Star
Chitin Chitin 3-4

See their main page for details on how to mine the barnacles.

Each time a barnacle is hit, there is a 10% chance that the leviathan will be disturbed (indicated by it shaking and emitting noise). Once 20 seconds have passed after it is first disturbed, it will begin permanently submerging into the ocean (accompanied by much more shaking and noises). During those 20 seconds, further hits still have a 10% chance to trigger additional shaking.

It takes roughly 25 seconds from the start of the leviathan's submersion process until its entire body is below the waterline. During the first few seconds it actually raises its body up higher, then slowly begins accelerating downward, eventually moving faster than 1 m/s.

Spawning[]

Leviathans are spawned upon world generation and do not respawn once they have retreated below the depths of the ocean.

They have 1% chance of appearing on each full Ocean zone and require at least 30 meters depth.

Strategy[]

For strategies for mining Leviathans, see Passive creature strategies § Leviathan.

Notes[]

  • As Chitin is primarily obtained from their barnacles, the only way to obtain additional Chitin after all of a world's Leviathans have been mined for it is by fishing using Heavy fishing bait. Chitin can be endlessly obtained this way, although the required bait can be difficult to obtain.

Trivia[]

  • The Leviathan in Valheim is based on the Hafgufa from Norse Mythology, and the game is faithful to their original appearance as a large creature that was mistaken for an island. The island is only its shell while the rest of the Hafgufa resides below.
  • The actual Leviathan is more akin to Valheim's Serpent.
  • During night time, its two glowing eyes can be seen underwater.
  • Their underside lacks any distinct features and detail. This is likely intended from a development standpoint because players are only supposed to see the top part of them that is visible above water.
