Tar pits are a point of interest found in Plains, introduced in the Hearth & Home update. Areas explored in worlds generated prior to this update will not contain tar pits.

Description[]

Tar Nodes can be found in and around tar pits; they contain Tar and can only be harvested by hand if the tar pit is sufficiently drained first. The highest-yield nodes will be located at the bottom of the pit.

Strategy[]

Tar pits can be drained by digging a trench from the tar pit to a lower level location (see gallery). They are typically guarded by four or more Growths. If they are killed, two Growths will eventually respawn in the area, even if the tar is drained.

Swimming in a tar pit applies the Tarred debuff and slows down the player.

Notes[]

  • Destroying bones found around tar pits rewards players with Bone Fragments.
  • Tar pits cannot be set on fire with a Torch or otherwise.
  • Other items dropped in tar pits will also become impossible to retrieve until the tar pit is drained.
  • Items stuck in tar will not despawn.
  • Growths are naturally hostile to most other creatures in the Plains.
