baby step

A very small or tentative action, process, or stage in the advancement toward some larger or more difficult goal or end. Usually used in the plural. Reducing rates for middle and lower earners is a nice baby step, but it's a long way off from the total tax overhaul this country needs. I agree that we don't want to rush into anything, but we can't be taking mere baby steps into the digital marketplace if we want our company to survive. A: "Hey, I heard you're teaching your granny how to use a computer!" B: "Well, so far she can turn it on and log in. Baby steps, but we're making progress."
