Amsterdam is the capital city of the Netherlands. It serves as a semi-playable micro "terrain" in ArmA 3.

Overview[]

NOTE:

  • The Amsterdam "terrain" is featured exclusively for the free Art of War exhibition/showcase gallery.
  • It is not a standalone, fully playable terrain of its own.

« Time for a little R&R - and a visit to Amsterdam's Lars Blanken Gallery.

The current collection, displayed as the 2035 Art of War exhibition, features award-winning works from an eclectic mix of international artists. Some you may know, others you may not. These creators for charity, who have generously donated their works to raise money for victims of armed conflict, come from a range of different backgrounds and professions, allowing us to present important themes through a kaleidoscopic lens, colored by diverse views and cultural perspectives.

The Lars Blanken Gallery - Amsterdam's famous museum of fine arts[1], is named after Lars Blanken, a Dutch philanthropist and founder of the Non-Government Organisation, the International Development & Aid Project (IDAP).[2]

Visitors to the gallery can see the numerous artworks on display, gifted by artists of various backgrounds, to raise money for victims of conflicts throughout the globe.[3]

They can also take the opportunity to learn about the relevance of International Humanitarian Law (IHL)[4], and the future of warfare with its potential implications on armed conflict between humans.[5]

Terrain-specific texts[]

« The Lars Blanken Gallery is named after a Dutch philanthropist and the founder of the International Development & Aid Project. It opened in 2013. »
« Amsterdam has more bridges than Paris, and more canals than Venice, collectively spanning over 100 kilometers. »
« There are over a million bicycles in Amsterdam, far outnumbering the city's population. »
« The city of Amsterdam has a proud cultural heritage, being home to paintings by Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Pieter Bruegel, Gerard ter Borch, Jan Steen, M. C. Escher, and many more. »
« More than any other city in the world, Amsterdam has the highest concentration of museums per square meter. »

Trivia[]

  • The inscriptions on the rotunda dome roughly translate into a quote spoken by the IDAP's founder, Lars Blanken ("Gentlemen, man's humanity has been weighed and found wanting - but together we can tip the scales.").[2][6]
  • Arma3-terrain-amsterdam-10

The "gallery" as viewed from the "outside".

The "terrain" is merely fabricated out of editor props/structures on the dried lake of Altis' Almyra with a layer of trimmed grass placed on the ground to simulate a "clean" surface texture.
  • For instance, each "room" in the "gallery" is actually a separate object that is simply stitched with one another to form a T-shape. Should the player manage to get "out" of the gallery, they can even see that the model exteriors are completely culled (as the player will never be able to see it in normal gameplay).
  • Additional changes such as sharply reducing the draw distance and the existence of fake highrises/apartment buildings in the background are used to further the illusion that Amsterdam is a "real" terrain.
