EDIT:
[image] IT WORKED! YES!YES!YES! You cannot imagine how happy I'm when I go to see the second round of the Goodreads Choice Awards and The Shadows Between Us are nominated in the Best Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction. The write-in worked!
EDIT: Wow, I have to say that I was quite surprised that I did not see this book nominated in Young Adult Fantasy for the Goodreads Choice Awards. So, let's see if there is some power in the write-in option.
ORIGINAL: Was this book perfect? No. Did this book deliver on everything I've expected from it? No. Do I care? No. Why? Because it was such a long time since I enjoyed "YA"/fantasy book so much as I did enjoy this one.
As I previously mentioned, I was sold when this book was labelled as "Slytherin".
If only he knew I have my sights set a bit higher than that.
Yeah, I was hyped when I started this book, and the beginning was so good, I had problems to remember to breathe, and then I was close to hyperventilating. It was everything my Slytherin heart wanted.
"People are staring." "That's the point, isn't it?"
Alessandra was the kind of character I wanted. I'm so over the shocked girls who have no idea why people think that they are pretty or don't want to be in the situation 'cause they just want a nice simple life. Who are shocked by the evil people and don't get it why people are just so mean. Finally, a character who is very self-aware, has a goal, is ambitious and does not care what it takes to get what they want. Love it, and I need more books like this. I also loved every single time Alessandra chewed up someone or schemed.
What I did not expect was to get more characters like that in the book.
See that all the men who accompanied us on our outing are hanged.
The King is just as ambitious. And at that point, I practically want to propose to this book.
Plus the fact that Alessandra has an obsession with pretty dresses which she creates for herself, (Which made me realise how rare it is for female characters to have hobbies besides reading.) and that the friendships are a surprisingly fun and great addition to the story are not helping to me not being obsessed.
There were several side plots which kept the story moving, so, I never really felt like nothing was happening.
So, where did it go wrong? Because yeah, I love this book, but there are things which irked me, to say the least.
First, the main "villain" (if you do not count Alessandra as the villain of the story) was very obvious. Plus the reason or explanation behind their actions was pretty easy to guess as well. I'm not angry by it, just disappointed.
Second, Alessandra started great, but then I felt like a bit of her disappeared. The part which had a plan and was ready for everything. (view spoiler)[Like, please, if you get poison to kill someone and then change your mind, don't just chuck it somewhere. (hide spoiler)] The dumb move is the season.
Third, I did not really feel like we got a good grasp on the background, on the setting, and sometimes things just felt a bit confusing. But yeah, I get it, it's standalone, and while I may have some grief with the lack of world setting, I love the author for keeping it a standalone.
Fourth, Kallias just sometimes felt a bit too mushy.
And now, fifth and last, the ending. What is it with endings? I hoped for a different ending. More original. (view spoiler)[ It was again way too roses and pink. Everything was well and happy. And I just felt like something had to give. Something bad. Or just some huge power move. Just something which would leave me speechless the moment I would close the book. Only being able to say WOW. But this was a very forgettable ending. Average. (hide spoiler)] And while I had four more issues with this book. The ending is the reason why I took one star away.

And also the fabulous buddy-read with Mary helped me to enjoy this book even more!

- This was me while reading all the time! Since we were reading only 5 or 6 chapters per day (okay except for the last but one when we read 12 but WE NEEDED ANSWERS!)
- Mary had to suffer through numerous of my conspiracy theories and since I had so much time to think about those theories. Some of them were crazily correct! I have to say; my theory game was on point with this one!
- When I first found out about this book, it really reminded me about Three Dark Crowns. With the title, with the cover (I know it's blue, now but my screen colour is always so much down that it seemed black). And I even thought that this was the last book in that series. And now I just hope that people won't mistake it for TDC because this is worth reading!
- You get action from the first page! Somethings happening all the time and you're trying to connect all those dots, and then you find out that you completely overlooked something. (Or you did not think that it was important!)
- I like Kera! She's snarky, rude and resourceful! She's fun, and I really liked her, it was a long time since I liked the main female character that much!
- This book made me laugh at the most inappropriate moments!
"To be safe, she emptied half the bottle."
“So no to breaking into the palace, but yes to stealing more clothes?”
- Varin is cute and everything... but I'm not here for the cute!
“Go, you stupid Eonist!”
- Talking about Eonists, I could not imagine living in Eonia! That Quadrant freaked me out! (view spoiler)[ The moment you're born they determine when you'll die. But not determine, they set the date! Like finding that you have an illness, but you will be fine for the next 20 years, so they give you the 20 years and then set your death date because you would be a burden on the society! Or if you fail at your job, they can move the death date closer! (hide spoiler)]
- And Mackiel? That's what I'm here for! I loved his character! Loved to watch his plans!
- The timeline of the story was a killer!
- Romance: (view spoiler)[Not a fan of it. Kera is going to eat Varyn alive! I still don't get it how they got "in love". (hide spoiler)]
- And obviously the one thing I did not question (but messed every my theory) came to bite me!
- This book made me slightly paranoid!
- And huge thanks to the author that she made this a stand-alone! Because most would try to make a trilogy out of this, but thankfully this was not the case. Instead, we got actioned packed one book which is totally worth it!
But, you know me, I have to point out some things that I did not like. Four quadrants and the kingdom (or should I say queendom?) is called Quadara? A bit originality, please! (view spoiler)[ The end is a bit too happy for me! I know, three Queens are dead, but it's written in such a way that you know that the things will move towards the better. That the one Queen will unite the Quadara and will be Queen for everyone! She will try to remove the death date for Eonist and stuff like that! Kera's father is healed; she will reunite with them, they will love her again. And she'll live happily ever after with Varin... (hide spoiler)] --> This would be minus 0,5 ⭐....more

Which is actually good because I enjoyed more this way.
However, I need to rate this one 3,5/5⭐ for all the reasons stated below ⬇.
“I think I might have seen pride in Dad’s eyes. Or maybe it was just a gleam of Why is my offspring so insane?”
This may be slightly spoilerish.
I still find it strange that the Casnoffs simply knew everything. I wanted/waited for someone to be a traitor and was giving them information. (view spoiler)[I always thought that it was Cal because that would make sense and would explain a lot of things. But now, he is only a goood guy that stupidly dies without any good reason. (hide spoiler)]
The end regarding Elodie was laughable! I want Elodie from the first book.
I waited for L´occhio de Dio to appear and maybe them to work together? “Right. So no plans at all then?" Jenna frowned. "Other than rocking in the fetal position for a while?" "Yeah, I was thinking about taking one of those showers where you huddle in the corner fully clothed and cry," Archer offered.”
I want more Mercer/Cross! (view spoiler)[I love them together so much, but they actually did not have a lot of space as a couple on the page. I need more! (hide spoiler)]
I really liked this series and even this book. But the problem was that in this one you could really feel how much it was rushed! It needed a hundred more pages. Or another book because so much was stuffed together that I could not really enjoy all of it. There are so many questions! I need more on Hex Hall, the Council, the Brannicks, Mercer/Cross, James/Grace, L´occhio de Dio and even more on Casnoffs! And I really need more on Nick and Daisy because they are too much of sweethearts for me....more

“I'm sure you're wondering why I've brought you here." I moved to the center of the room, my strappy sandals clacking on the marble floor. "I'm assuming this is where the punishment part comes in," I said. "So do I need to clean all these mirrors, or do I have to, like, stare at myself until I feel shamed or something?" Surprisingly, Dad gave a tiny smile. "No, nothing quite that abstract. I want you to break one of the mirrors." "Excuse me?" Dad leaned back against the now-drapeless window and folded his arms over his chest. "Break a mirror, Sophie." "What what, my head? Because I'm pretty sure that'd be corporal punishment, and Mom would not be cool with that." "With your powers." Ugh. I took in the dozens of mirrors and muttered, "I think I'd rather use my head.”
Which is still my favourite, :D I cannot help, I love Sophie's humour, and I love that her father has it as well. I sort of felt like reading it for the first time because I just wanted to scream "what!"
The first book is slightly better, but it was still awesome.

On one side this book's killing me! The ending always breaks my heart. It starts to break a long time before the end because I know what's coming. (view spoiler)[I'm not counting the fact that Mel faked her death. I hate the whole "she's dead but surprises! she's not. (hide spoiler)]
On one side, I love how cruel they still are. But on the other side, I think that the parent side of them changed them a bit. And I dislike Mel being a Governor because in a way it feels like she's going back on herself. It is not something that they would do, too many short strings that lead to them. They would just get someone to do the job for them.
The major problem I have with this book (or maybe whole series but it also continues in the Children of Vice series) is the really bad editing. And I do not even mean the typos (and there are typos don't get me wrong). I meant the fact that the consistency is non-existent in here. Previously I mentioned problems like Mel wearing a dress, suddenly trousers and then, magic, dress again. However, here and then in Children of Vice it gets even worse. When the previous book ended with the epilogue, it took time pretty much at the same time as A Bloody Kingdom. In the epilogue of the American Savages, we see Monte and Fedel waiting for Mel and Liam. But in here Melody mentions that Monte died a long time ago. And that's one of the things I really hate! And with every re-read of this series, I keep seeing more and more of these little misshaps. So, I think that there will be no re-read of this in a long time.
By the way, can I say that I do not like Coraline?
ORIGINAL: I am really torn on this one.
When the third book ended my first thought was that I cannot imagine Liam and Melody being old. With teenage kids, adult kids and then grandchildren. It wasn't them.
The thing I liked the most is that they're evil until the end. Still on top, still strong and playing the world.
At first, I sort of felt cheated. (view spoiler)[ Just saying that Monte and Jinx died that seemed cheap. They deserved much more. And Mel as a governor? I wasn't sure if that was really her. Like with the president she would get a puppet. (hide spoiler)]
I was torn on them being parents. Not sure if I like them being parents. Cause I loved them so much in the first book. Not really sure being parents is what I want from them. :D On one side they were amazing. They have so much love for their kids. But they also fear to lose them. (view spoiler)[ I understand why they started to train them to be strong and to survive. But that doesn't mean it did not break my heart a bit. Not for the kids. But for the pain, Liam and Mel had to be feeling. (hide spoiler)]
...there is a lot of blood in front of those hospital doors.
I wish there was more of a story for Fedel. He would deserve one. (view spoiler)[ Painfully loyal till the bitter end. He did not deserve to die this away! (hide spoiler)]
At first, since the chapter 24, I expected something to shatter their world. I could not stop crying. (view spoiler)[I was angry at her faking her death. This Melody in hiding? That wasn't her! (hide spoiler)]
And now, thinking about it I think it's brilliant. Sort of. I wanted her or both of them to die. In some epic was! Go up in flames and never to be forgotten! To be on top of the world. (view spoiler)[I still don't see them as two "older" people just having fun. (hide spoiler)]
I also wonder if at the end Liam also (view spoiler)[faked his death or simply passed the job and left. (hide spoiler)]
EDIT: I think this book of all four has the strongest ending. Minus like the last chapter. But since the chapter 24, I think it was one of the highest moments of the series, definitely emotionally highest because seriously, every time I get to chapter 24 until the last chapter (minus epilogue) I always cannot stop crying even though I already know how it ends!...more

However, the more I read it, the more I see that it needs serious editing. Not only for typos but for consistency. Sudden changes in how the scene is described, what they are wearing. Those are small things, but they chip on an otherwise great book!
And what I said after my last re-read of the first book. The Italian sentences are wrong! It really seems like Google translate sentences. Please, please, go on a Facebook find an Italian (native-speaking one) and ask them to look at the sentence you have in Italian. It will be life (and the reader), saver.
3,5/5 ⭐ (It would be 4 ⭐ but I have to take something down for the Italian.
ORIGINAL:The people think you're cold and heartless, with a rich husband, and a powerful daddy. They dislike you and will continue to dislike you until you stop showing them who you really are and start being who they want you to be.
A wake-up call for Olivia?
When Melody finally gives her what she wanted for years, she still finds a ground how to bitch about life being unfair.
Melody is the queen of liars. She can put up any face she wants. Love that.
Melody is still the badass who looks where the next punch is coming.
I even liked Liam more than in the first book. He has more of a backbone and seemed way more mature. And he should seriously buy a hospital for Melody. And at the end, my heart broke a bit for him again.

A couple of months ago I started with Italian, and it managed to destroy a book for me, already! Okay, the thing is, Melody is Italian, and several times she or another character speak Italian. The author several times said that she had it multiple times checked to make sure those sentences are correct. But I can say that she did not! I can see those mistakes. And I love this book or even the whole series. But honestly, I'm just angry with another series because the author butchered Russian there. And it is not fair to give this book a free pass just because I like it. I can recognise that the other author managed to butcher the language in a couple of words. McAvoy is failing on longer sentences. However, I'm telling you, it is better to have no Italian (or any language you do not know) than butcher the language. Also, because I read this book several times, I know it, and with every re-read, I see more and more typos, nonsense sentences and switches in the scenes. Like Mel wearing a dress, suddenly it's a t-shirt, and on the next page, it's a dress once again. I love McAvoy and her books because the characters are just so ruthless. However, she needs a better editor! And a native Italian.
In regards to me a little revelation, I need to lower the rating. But I can honestly say that if it was my first read, I saw the bad Italian I would be angrier. However, since I already have a little connection to the story, I'm going to be a bit nicer. (4/5 ⭐)
EDIT: I had to change the rating because this one is my favourite in the series. (5/5 ⭐)
ORIGINAL: This just randomly appeared in my Goodreads Updates Feed, and I knew I had to read it. So, I put it in my To Read shelf and move one. But some little devil was sitting on my shoulder and screaming to read it right away. And I did. (4/5 ⭐)
Love this because they are really bad guys and openly evil. And they own it. There is no good vs evil. This is about who's the biggest evil of them all! Finally! I waited so long for a book where the characters would just own that they are not good or pretend there is some higher good they do evil things for.
I don't say this very often. But I loved the main heroine. Melody was everything. Rude. Smart. Wicked. Evil. Cold. And much more. But mainly - She was a boss from start to finish. I love how at their first meeting she came on top. Knowing more then the Callahans did. (view spoiler)[ And honestly? I loved that she was so violent. Like actually firing at him! (hide spoiler)]
Liam was an idiot. But amazing idiot! I loved that his little "man-only" word was turned around.
What I really liked about this was the dynamics. Usually in books like this book you got an evil man and weeping flower. Or if she is some sort of leader, she, thanks to her love for the man, realises that she doesn't want to be like that and hands him all the power. No, they were a match set in hell.
Also, Fedel is sooo damn cute! I want to see more of him.
And I have to have some negatives. - (view spoiler)[ Really, getting pregnant? That fast? I thought she was using a pill or something? But okay when she got pregnant, I knew something would happen to the baby. (hide spoiler)] - The Liam's little play to make sure (view spoiler)[ she loves him real and forever (hide spoiler)] was a bit theatrical. But okay. - Was this a Twilight fan fiction? Because I got a bit of that vibe. Especially with the characters in the family. Even the Melody/Olivia hate was sort of Bella/Rosalie... But maybe I am seeing things that do not exist. :D - Olivia needs a good death. And quickly. She's getting on my nerves. - Some typos - not a grammar nazi. I know that I have a lot of typos and grammar mistakes, and usually I just do not realise it. But when even I see them in a book? That's not good....more

It does not matter who stands in their way, innocent or not people are dying left and right. Which is the part that I like about this book... I'm weird, I know.
The thing I do not like is the epilogue, especially since the epilogue is actually the fourth book in the series.
However, the Italian is still sort of messed up. I'm not claiming that I'm an expert in Italian, still a beginner. However, I can pick up some things that are simply wrong, and certain sentences even make no sense.
Plus, the book has its usual share of typos. It's begging for a better editor.
But despite this all, I still like this book. But, I think there will be no other re-read in a long time.
ORIGINAL: They are back and more ruthless than ever. There is nothing they won't do to avenge themselves, and no one who stands in their way is safe. I really liked it. Thought the beginning was a bit painful to watch.

And I still do! There is not much for me to say other than that I had an absolute blast reading this. I was grinning, laughing, I was enjoying what I was reading.
“Oh, God. I’m trapped in the fucking Chronicles of Narnia." "I’m sure that would be an amusing reference, if I understood it.”
This is one of the few books that has lines on the spine from how often I held it open. Especially that one which goes to pages 102 and 103 is really worrying me!
Anyway, I totally loved all the little "foreshadowing" for the rest of the series which I did not see before. Love it!

After reading Checking In I just had to re-read The Bad Ones. And I still love this book so much. Love how wicked and insane they are.
Original review: What did I just read? :o
Perfection!
This is the kind of story I was looking for for ages. I believe that books have no limits - you can imagine anything. You can bring the most amazing villains to life for readers to fall in love with them.
This is sick, sinister, twisted and beyond wrong. And absolutely perfect. Dulcie and Constantine could be pretty normal even boring. ALONE. But together they are bringing up something in them. They are daring each other to be as bad as possible.
Usually, if you read a story about someone bad you'll be getting a long list of excuses for what they are doing. Then they gonna regret everything and change.
Not in this one. They're bad because they want to be. They are aware that what they're doing is wrong. And they want more.
“ When do we get to be bad again?” She smiled big. “Baby, I thought you'd never ask.”
I hope they'll be bad again - soon. Because this story just found it's way into my TOP 10. I just cannot resist the wicked characters, I guess.

And after a couple of chapters, I realised what I did. So, I went back to it, and there was a lot of skipping. I just had such a hard time to get into this book. < spoiler>So, looking at my original review and after finishing all books in this series. I have to say I'm officially disappointed that they never used those things they took from Sector Five. And making Hana sick, so, Finn could play a hero was just so cheap.
Original:
"You're a crazy motherfucker." "I know."
I love so much the Ace&Jared&Cruz scene! So cute and I need more of it! As it's from Cruz's point of view - we can see his affection for Ace.
I actually liked that Mad hates Finn. And I also like that Bren and Jas were giving him a chance. < spoiler> Well, Jas gave him a chance after he hit him. It's way better than if everybody was reacting the same.
One thing that really disappointed me was < spoiler> that Hana was sick and it feels like they just needed a way how to make Finn look like a hero. < spoiler> I hope that they took something important that will be useful in next books. Otherwise, it will be a huge letdown and wasted opportunity.
I wish Dallas, Lex, Jas, and Noelle also played poker.
"... You're not even gonna take me to your leader, lady?" "You just had that meeting, sunshine."
I wish there would be more brotherhood scenes. Like the one at the very end. I also think that it was way much just Finn&Trix. That the rest of O'Kanes had less space than in other books. Well, maybe it was just because I love them so much and wouldn't be angry if every one of them had another book.
"A silk nightie and a fur coat splattered with blood. And cool as can fucking be. If she's not high on something, then I'm a virgin." - Ace
< spoiler> Cannot wait to get more of Lili, when she came there it was pretty crazy. And she's half crazy too. Cannot wait to find out if Logan got a chance to start drug therapy so Lili could be pregnant.
I hope that there will be Gideon's book, cause I probably love this guy.
< spoiler>And I think that I'm pretty sure about three characters for Beyond Ruin: Mad, Doc, Jade & - who knows?

Ble!
:D Nešlo to jinak.

However, despite loving this, there is something different which makes it a bit hard to decide on the rating. I feel like there was something missing in this story, maybe too many characters, so something had to be cut... Because since there are so many of them, people tend to find favourites, and then they wish for more content about them.
This book had me totally destroyed, I did not see this coming at all and it was so painfully good, I just cannot take it.
I just wish there were more of Jason/Piper moments because so far they are quickly becoming my favourite couple. I adore Percy and Annabeth; they are the original Riordan couple; I could not wait for them to get together. And I'm so happy for them.
I hope that Percy and Nico will talk and everything will be all right forever. I'm not a fan of Happily Ever After but I so much need a happy ending for Nico and a book for him as well. I finally started to like Leo (view spoiler)[, please, be with Calypso! (hide spoiler)] However, I still don't like Hazel or Frank. They just do not fit with the rest, to be honest. (view spoiler)[ Well, I hope that there will be different ending than that Jason'll go to the Half-blood Camp and Percy to the Jupiter Camp. (hide spoiler)]
Maybe this book wasn't perfect, but I'm not able to give only 4*. I would feel terrible. Because these books are just so awesome and leave me grasping for the next book....more
