In Songs of Conquest, your armies can be composed of dozens of different types of units and some of them stand out more than others. On this page of our guide, you can find a list of the best units - both those that are relatively strong compared to their price, as well as elite ones that recruiting costs a lot of gold and other resources. Individual paragraphs link to units of different factions - we have a section for Arleon, Barony of Loth, Barya, and Rana.

We provide names of both variants of the unit, and you should always strive to upgrade your units to higher tiers by building the required buildings. We discuss this topic in more detail on a separate page Recruitment and upgrading troops.

Arleon units

Rangers / Archers - Songs of Conquest: Best units - Basics - Songs of Conquest Guide

Rangers / Archers

Unit cost: 200 Gold / 300 Gold

These units, compared to Militia and Sappers do not have to reload their ranged weapons which means being able to attack in every round. Additionally, Archers have an especially useful Ambush ability that allows them to fire first at the enemy unit that entered their Deadly Range (5 tiles).

Knights / Fists of Order

Unit cost: 700 Gold / 1000 Gold, 1x Celestial Ore

These units can cross up to 5 tiles within a single move and each passed tile increases the damage of melee attacks - this means that they can get close to the enemy very fast and attack first with a powerful attack. Fists of Order also have the passive Strengthen ability that increases the damage dealt by neighboring allied units.

Faey Nobles / Faey Queens

Unit cost: 1000 Gold, 1x Glimmerweave / 1800 Gold, 2x Glimmerweave

Try to capture at least one Glimmerweave mine as the resource is often used to buy even the basic units. Faey Nobles are strong ranged units that provide passive bonuses to neighboring allied units (Melee Offense, Ranged Offense, Initiative). Faey Queens also have the Faey Fire skill that allows hitting random enemies with energy bolts.

Barony of Loth units

Toxicologists / Banes

Unit cost: 250 Gold / 500 Gold

The big advantage of these units is that they do not receive a penalty to ranged attack power after performing a move. This way, you can get closer to the enemy units and perform a fully-fledged attack in the same turn. Additionally, a struck opponent may receive damage over time through 2 next turns. Finally, Banes can ignore Zone of Control.

Spectres / Seneschals

Unit cost: 650 Gold / 1100 Gold

These units, similarly to the ones described above, can ignore Zone of Control, even in their lower-tier form. Additionally, they have high Initiative. Seneschals can moreover steal Essence from nearby enemy units and this will allow your Wielder to cast more spells.

Legions / High Legions

Unit cost: 1400 Gold, 1x Ancient Amber / 2000 Gold, 2x Ancient Amber.

Try to capture at least one Ancient Amber mine as the resource is often used to buy even the basic units. Legions are powerful units with high survivability and strong attack and additionally have increased resistance to ranged attacks. These units can moreover lower the defense and Initiative of nearby enemy units. Finally, High Legions have the Protect ability that improves the defense and magic resistance of neighboring allied units.

Barya units

Pikeneers / Veteran Pikeneers

Unit cost: 170 Gold / 290 Gold

The main advantage coming from these units is that their effective melee attack range is increased by 1. This will allow you to melee attack even when standing 1 tile away from the opponent - you will make him unable to respond to your melee attack and you can continue attacking the enemy even if an obstacle separates you. Veteran Pikeneers have the Spearwall ability that allows them to automatically attack any opponent entering their range.

Dreaths / Dire Dreaths

Unit cost: 150 Gold / 250 Gold

These creatures can attack the enemy unit first i.e. before the attack of the opponent. This way, you can protect your units, as Dreaths will be the ones that make the first move in melee range. Dire Dreaths additionally have the Bolster ability that increases Melee Offense, Defense and Initiative of neighboring allied units. Moreover, their retaliation can ensue any number of times - Dreaths will respond with attacks of their own every time an enemy attacks.

Hellbreaths / Hellroars

Unit cost: 1300 Gold, 1x Celestial Ore / 2000 Gold, 2x Celestial Ore

During your matches, try to capture at least one Celestial Ore mine as the resource is often used to buy even the basic units. Hellbreaths can attack enemies from a distance of up to 8 tiles. However, remember to protect them, as they cannot retaliate, and after each shot, they have to reload. Hellroars additionally have the Bombard ability that, per its name, can launch an attack that affects a larger area.

Rana units

Crawlers / Burrowers - Songs of Conquest: Best units - Basics - Songs of Conquest Guide

Crawlers / Burrowers

Unit cost: 450 Gold / 700 Gold

Crawlers should be upgraded to Burrowers as soon as possible, as only the latter have the ability to Burrow. With it, they can disappear from the battlefield for 1 round and appear in a completely different area. This is an excellent way of attacking enemy ranged units. However, try to target such tiles that have a low chance of being taken by enemy units, as otherwise, the Burrowers will return to their starting location. Additionally, enemy units near your Burrower may receive penalties to Defense and Initiative.

Tremors

Unit cost: 650 Gold

This unit is unique somewhat, as it doesn't have a higher-tier version. Tremors are characterized by their high Initiative and can additionally lower Initiative and Defense of enemy units. The effect can be further strengthened by their Dragon's Roar ability.

Dragons / Elder Dragons

Unit cost: 2500 Gold, 2x Ancient Amber / 3000 Gold, 4x Ancient Amber

Both versions of dragons are immensely powerful units in the game, having high Initiative, movement range, health, attack power, and additionally can attack while 1 tile away from the opponent, thus without risk of enemy retaliation. Both dragon variants have the Flame Breath ability that can additionally reach enemies standing behind the targeted unit, and the Menacing Roar ability that lowers Initiative and Movement of enemy units in the 2-tile range.
