First Festival Solos for Flute is a series of 20 easy solos with piano
accompaniment. The pieces are composed or arranged by Larry Clark and Sean O'Loughlin, who profess in their introduction that the solos are, "both musically fresh and more indicative of the types of contemporary music that the students will encounter as they develop into their later years in instrumental music." Standards by Schumann and Beethoven augment the original beginning material, and it is difficult to see how this collection will somehow shape the student's later years more than other available collections.
The book opens with a lovely jazz
accompaniment for "Brethren We Have Met to Worship" and closes with a gentle Celtic version of "Where He Leads Me I Will Follow." In between there is a stirring arrangement of "Sweet Hour of Prayer" and "Have Thine Own Way" in the gospel style, while a Celtic
accompaniment highlights "Lead On, O King Eternal" and "Where He Leads Me, I Will Follow." A jazz
accompaniment enhances "Higher Ground," and "Were You There?" The Latin style was chosen for "Come Thou Almighty King." Southern gospel style includes "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms," "A New Name in Glory," and "There is Power in the Blood." One hymn, "Our Great Savior," is arranged as a set of variations.--Reviewed by Sue Arnold Dorsett, Charlotte, North Carolina

One year, while teaching the third semester of JMC, I played a simple theme and variations based on a keyboard harmony piece the children were learning: "How Cute." The left-hand
accompaniment pattern of one variation, "How Silly!", included a minor second.
The famous Carnival theme and variations is maintained by the trumpet soloist, and Frackenpohl has skillfully arranged an exciting brass quintet

Although there are many barriers to experimenting with improvisation or playing by ear, these barriers provide us with a compelling reason to work with some simple, yet effective, electronic tools, such as the MIDI
accompaniment file.

Cleaning up to each page would be more mentally freeing to remember the plethora of chords and
accompaniments. The method progresses quickly, so younger or less adept students may struggle to remember all of the previously learned concepts while progressing through the book.

accompaniments, demonstrate a mastery of English song composition techniques.
Kerry Foods has entered the Frozen Vegetables &

Labelle's haunting, white tone in the Ravel is ideal, as is Wyner's evocative
accompaniment. She brings an endearing lyricism to the more foursquare Saint-Saens songs (concluding with a driving performance of the original vocal version of his famous "Danse macabre"), and her tone and phrasing in the lovely Hahn songs, with their gently -flowing
accompaniments, are exquisite.
