fee paying service

Any diagnostic and therapeutic service for which money is paid to a consultant (specialist) in the UK, and performed outside of his/her usual (NHS) workday, usually after the consultant has finished his/her NHS lists and surgeries. Fee-paying services are not uncommonly performed in private hospitals (e.g., BUPA hospitals, Nuffield hospitals).
