In the beginning I was getting vibes of "Station Eleven" and even "The Stand" but by the middle point I was bored and struggled to finish the book. I was able to finish it by trying the audiobook but even then I struggled the concentrate.

Don't recommend the audiobook as some characters sounded quite robotic and it took me out of the story.
Overall it left me wanting to find more books with a similar premise since it didn't give me what I want.
Any recommendation of books where you don't know who's crazy/telling the truth?...more
I caught it twice in the month it took me to read this book. Twice! I'm rarely sick so it's clearly a thing.
PostWant to catch the flu? Read The Stand.

Post-apocalyptic book where most people die from a super flu. That part was my favorite.
It then becomes a battle between Good and Evil. Some fantasy elements were included. This part was still solid. I liked how we got to follow the characters and get to know them. I felt some similarities to Station Eleven so if you like The Stand I would give this one a shot too!...more

I loved Dark Matter and the Wayward Pines series so I might be extra salty here but, if I hadn’t read these books before this one, I would have DNFed it after a few pages.
The premise was intriguing. People that saw an aurora borealis go crazy and kill people. Okay. I like post-apocalyptic books… But the premise was the only good thing here. That and the fact that the author is good keeping you at the edge of your seat but… The writing, the characters, the dialogues… were just straight up bad.
I'm not a violent person and I would never wish harm to anyone... but I was hoping the children here would die. There were insufferable.
The ending was not satisfying at all. I wouldn’t recommend this to my worst enemy.
I think I’ll stick to reading his newer books from now on because they were much better....more

This book contained a lot of characters. A LOT. I did appreciate most of the feminist views included although it sometimes bordered on the "m'lady hat tipping" side.
This book also featured one of my new most hated character of all time! Congrats Don Peters, you're a POS! :D
I'll probably update this review when I have more time to think about it. I did like it but it's not my favorite from SK....more

I've been going through my list of "post-apocalyptic books to read" and this one had been recommend to me so much that I had to read it. Within the last year I read The Stand by Stephen King (disease) and Swan Song by Robert McCammon (nuclear war) so it's impossible for me not to compare them.
In The Passage, the apocalypse happens though vampires (not the shiny type!). You get to see the before, during and after through the eyes of a few characters and writing-wise it did remind me a bit of SK.
I understand why there's an abridged version - this book is very long and I honestly felt a bit exhausted after reading it. I do recommend it if you're someone that likes character driven books since, while there is quite a bit of action, you get to follow them while they go through a lot.
While it wasn't my all time favorite post-apocalyptic book, I am open to reading the rest of the series!
Shoutout to the author for making the villain call women "females" and making the male characters think it sounds like he's talking about livestock.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts as this was our first buddy read in the Fox Book Club!...more

What I would have liked knowing beforehand:
- Nuclear war with Russia - There are fantasy elements in here - Yes, it's long... - There's a war going on so if you're not really into military fiction... won't be for you! - Overall it was almost too realistic... - Did I say it was really dark?

A great premise, I loved the flashbacks but I hate with a burning passion when things are left opened. If it's aliens, tell me and I'll love it. If you leave things unsaid, I'll assume you had no idea how to finish your book. The ending wasn't as shocking as others have said. Overall a bit underwhelming after seeing all the rave.
In light of the movie I thought I would update this review. The movie absolutely did justice to the book. In fact, I liked it more than the book. The flashbacks are terrifying and the present time scenes are much better.
I still think it's worth a read. I definitely could feel a sense of dread at times while reading it!...more
