The Powder Monkey is a Mob exclusive to Don't Starve Together introduced in The Curse of Moon Quay update.

They can be found living on the Moon Quay where they appear during the day and in dusk, spawning from Monkey Huts as well as occasionally appearing from the Unnatural Portal. Powder Monkeys are also encountered as part of Pirate Raids.

Upon spawning, they have a 30% chance of receiving a Pirate's Bandana. Powder Monkeys always appear from Monkey Huts with a Cutless. On death, a new Powder Monkey will reappear from its Hut after three in-game days.

Behavior[]

Powder Monkeys populate the area around the Queen of Moon Quay and on the Docks.

Powder Monkeys, if not attacked, will not harass players who have the Right of Passage or Wonkey.

Powder Monkeys will use any nearby Cannons if it is facing a boat, launching Cannonballs at the player.

They have an inventory of 20 slots used for items they pick/steal. They can only pick/steal item if they have available inventory slot. Powder Monkeys considers items, including items inside players inventory, within 15m. They priortise picking/stealing banana, otherwise they pick/steal the nearest items. They will knock items out of the players' inventory on sight, similarily to Frogs, but without doing any damage unless a player strikes back, causing other Powder Monkeys in a large radius to join the fight. If the item is a Banana, the Monkeys will take it as a gift to the Queen of Moon Quay. Stolen items can be retrieved by killing the Powder Monkey who stole it or, after it escaped into a Monkey Hut, finding a Pirate Stash.

Powder Monkeys are able to empty Chests within 10m, knocking the items on the floor to steal them, similarily to Krampus. Dropped Backpacks and Ice Boxes are not targeted.

Powder Monkey harvest banana from bush within 15m.

They wander by running 0.2-1.0 seconds, stopping for 1-5 seconds before running again.

Any player that isn't Wonkey will not see the regular quotes, instead seeing random strings of "Ooo", "Eee", "Oee", "ki" and "k" with a dot at the end.

Tips[]

• The player should keep stacks of common items like Cut Grass or Twigs in their leftmost inventory slots to prevent valuable items from getting stolen.
• Homeless Powder Monkey can be used to pick up items like logs.

Trivia[]

• "Powder monkey" was a term used historically for sea men (often children) that would transport gunpowder for the ship's cannons.
• At the start of The Curse of Moon Quay's Rhymes With Play stream, artist and animator May Wa jumped out from behind a poster to parody a Powder Monkey. He held a banana and a plunger in his hand, and a small piece of paper was pasted over one eye instead of a pirate eyepatch.
