MacTusk N' Son, Walrus Hunting Party

Looks like somebody was camping here.

Wilson

MacTusk n' Son is a Walrus Hunting Party. It consists of MacTusk, Wee MacTusk, and two Blue Hounds. They spawn from Walrus Camps in Winter.

Brain Behavior[]

The two walruses walk about during the daytime and return to their igloo at dusk. They will awake at night and run out ready to fight if the hounds bark. If either walrus is alive, the camp emits a small amount of light at Night, but is generally too dangerous to serve as protection from Charlie.

The walruses are hostile towards almost any Mob. When MacTusk, becomes hostile, he makes a slashing gesture, he then shoots and pursues the target, while Wee MacTusk commands the Hounds to attack. Both walruses will flee when approached.

Should MacTusk and Wee MacTusk die, the Hounds will attack freely until they respawn. If the Hounds are killed but MacTusk survives, he will come out the next day. Dead members respawn in 2.5 days.

MacTusk[]

MacTusk is an aggressive Mob that spawns from Walrus Camps during Winter. Upon death, he drops 1 Meat, 1 Blow Dart, 1 Walrus Tusk (50% chance), & 1 Tam o' Shanter (25% chance).

He attacks with a Blow Dart (which has a longer range but deals less damage), while trying to keep his distance. One can dodge his darts with correct timing; using a Walking Cane or Roads will raise their chances.

Spear Hunting[]

If MacTusk ever gets more than about 4 tiles away from the player, he will shoot the player with his Blow Dart for 33 damage every couple seconds. MacTusk will run about 4 tiles from the nearest player and begin firing. If he gets about 2-3 screens away from his igloo, he sort of gives up and waddles back to his igloo, slowly and peacefully.

The most straight-forward method to kill MacTusk is to run between him and his igloo (ignoring the Blue Hounds), then chase him until he gets far enough away and goes passive. Then attack MacTusk with a decent melee weapon until dead. The hounds can be kited normally afterwards. Wee MacTusk has no attack and can be ignored, or shot with the blow dart after danger has passed.

Most players will need a hot Thermal Stone for warmth, a Tentacle Spike or Ham Bat for damage, and a Football Helmet and/or Log Suit for protection. One might build a Campfire a couple screens away, or simply light a tree on fire and drop a thermal stone at its base before a fight.

Farming[]

A ring of Tooth Traps around the igloo makes killing MacTusk relatively quick and painless, but only when the area is loaded (has a player within about 2 screens). Remember: MacTusk only spawns the first time in winter when the area is unloaded, so the player must wait for winter to start, then move into range. Once the party is killed, reset the traps.

Spiders or Pengulls will fight MacTusk and the walruses and eat the meat. Webber can safely get the drops from spiders. Pigs will fight the hounds, but not the walruses (they will also eat the meat). Tentacles attack everything. Bee mines can work too.

Any of these methods that don't work completely may distract MacTusk allowing the player to kill him easily as he won't be running away from the player when fighting.

Chester can be used as bait, by placing him between MacTusk and the player.

The party can also be chased or led into other Mobs (e.g. Merms, Pengulls, Tentacles ect.), or into Tooth Traps.

Below is the number of hits it takes with each weapon to kill MacTusk, for characters with no damage modifiers. The Weather Pain is not included due to the random nature of its projectile.

Wee MacTusk (also known as WeeTusk) is an aggressive Mob (with no attack) that spawns from Walrus Camps during Winter. Upon death, he drops 1 Meat (Don't Starve Together icon). He looks like he's controlling the Blue Hounds, but they behave the same without him.

If MacTusk and the hounds are killed, Wee MacTusk will run back to the Walrus Camp and not emerge until MacTusk respawns.

Prototype Tips[]

  • In the Reign of Giants (RoG) DLC, dispatching two Blue Hounds in quick succession (like with the Chester method above) will freeze the attacker, this can be avoided by waiting out the pale hue before killing the second one.
  • One can use a combo of Ice Staff and a weapon on MacTusk.
  • Should one come across a dormant Walrus Camp, it would be prudent to set up defenses, such as Tooth Traps.
  • It is possible to construct a MacTusk drop farm using at least 4 Pig Houses. Stone Walls can be used to keep them closer to each other, allowing easy access to the non-food drops. It also makes basing near the Walrus Camp more beneficial.

Placeholder Trivia[]

  • MacTusk N' Son was introduced in the A Winter's Tale update.
  • MacTusk deals 33 damage with his Blow Dart, whereas the player deals 100 damage with the same weapon. This is because MacTusk uses an identical weapon in the code with 0 damage, which takes his damage output. Without it, he would hurt the player instantly.
  • Wolfgang refers to MacTusk as "Sea Cow man!".Sea Cow is a marine mammal unrelated to the Walrus.
  • As seen by his quotes, Maxwell knows MacTusk and perhaps created him.
  • Both walruses share the same hunchback model as Pigs, Merms, and Bunnymen.
  • In the trailer for A Winter's Tale, Wee MacTusk also attacks the player.

Mosquito Bugs[]

  • MacTusk will become passive and return to his camp if chased outside of his wandering range, ignoring enemies.
  • In Don't Starve, WeeTusk won't drop Meat when killed because the wrong set of brackets is used in his loot table.
  • If the Walrus Camp is close to the shore, MacTusk may respawn and walk on the ocean, unable to get back on land. This bug also occurs to other mobs (such as Pigs and Wildbores) if their housing structure is too close to the ocean.
  • When the season changes, the group may be locked out of their camp, and therefore, be active outside of Winter.
