Neon Strata is a series of alternate future/universe skins in League of Legends. Set in a world where the Foreglow transforms champions into an otherworldly force called Empyrean.
Few know of the Foreglow, and even fewer have seen its volatile neon flames. Normally a cosmic balancing force, something has tipped the scales, causing realms to collapse and funnel the Foreglow's power into single beings. Now known as Empyreans, these otherworldly forces of nature blaze a trail through the realms, each with their own agenda. The fire is spreading, with no end in sight.
Lore[]
- The first Empyrean, Pyke, tears through the realms on a destructive rampage against his counterparts, birthing new Empyreans in the process. Who will reign supreme as these new powerhouses emerge, and what will they do with their rapidly dwindling time left?
- Empyreans
Before her realm's destruction, Akali was rotting away in prison for a failed assassination attempt on a despotic warlord. Now on her own as an Empyrean, she views her newfound freedom as a sign to stop the evil she couldn't before. The realms need a defender, and Akali is determined to fight for them as long as she can.
If the destruction of Brand's realm bent his mind, becoming an Empyrean broke it. To him, the randomness of being his realm's lone survivor and gaining the powers of a god prove that nothing truly matters. He could set fire to an entire planet or kill every version of his father. Everything is anarchy, and Brand is only too glad to spread it.
Hailing from a realm where he failed to protect his kingdom from annihilation, Jax was content to live in exile, until everything collapsed. Now an Empyrean, he knows that somewhere out there his kingdom is still intact. Even if it destroys him, he'll use all of his power to see his home one more time.
After the destruction of his home, the Empyrean known as Jax wanders through realm after realm, hoping to find one where a version of his lost land still survives...
But not all Empyreans are quite so peaceful. Jax will not hesitate to stand in the way of those like Pyke, who seek the destruction of one realm after the next. ( )
Jhin woke as an Empyrean with a sensation he'd never known before: true warmth. Exhilarated by the power, he set innocents ablaze with a flick of his hand. Finally, a muse worthy of him! The realization that “she” is slowly killing him only charms him more. Now if only he could find her source…
The Empyrean once known as Jhin is searching for the source of his own artistic fervor. The enchantment of a dangerous Muse draws him inexorably across realms--a poison he could never hope to resist.
"I would sacrifice every realm for the merest glimpse of a true Muse." - Empyrean Jhin
"There she is, at the end of this colorful carnage--the answer to the question at the heart of every performance." - Empyrean Jhin
"My art is the one art. This ashen realm stands witness!" - Empyrean Jhin
"Art is a fire of ecstasy that will consume us all. Burn, as I always imagined!" - Empyrean Jhin
"A fire, a flare, a burst of variegation!" - Empyrean Jhin
"I am a slave to this Muse. It was Her spark that set me free." - Empyrean Jhin ( , , , , , )
Royal life for Kayle was one of blissful ignorance, while her sister pursued justice and equality for their subjects. After becoming the sole survivor of her realm, Kayle was awoken, and saw her fate as punishment for years of indifference. Now she doles out justice across the realms in tribute to her sister, though her methods are far more... severe.
When flames swept through Kayle's studio, at first she was overcome with grief. She had lost everything, but then realized that the fire freed her to do—and be—more. Now she returns to the Gala with her new line, Neon Flame, crossing styles, materials, and forms. Kayle has been reborn, and she will transcend everyone.
K'Sante prides himself on leading under adversity, but this is a challenge unlike any other. His realm is gone, he's living on borrowed time, and the other Empyreans don't realize that something released the Foreglow. Something bad. He knows only they can fix it, but they need their eyes opened. They need a leader.
K'Sante's always been a trailblazer on the fashion circuit, and this year he definitely wants to make the audience sweat. With his crystal-laden drip and flawless makeup, he's about to light a fire under this Gala.
Forced to live in squalor and shame for her magical abilities, Lux ironically escaped certain death when her realm collapsed. Now with the raw power of the Foreglow, she's free. It doesn't matter that she's on her last legs: she intends to live and experience as much as she can before the fire consumes her.
When the destabilization of the Foreglow destroyed the realm she called home, Luxanna was finally able to claim the power she had been denied all her life. She will make the most of this Empyrean liberation--even if the cost of freedom is her own inevitable destruction.
"They were afraid of the light within. They should have feared the fire without."
"This radiance is building. The Foreglow can be channeled, but never contained!" - Empyrean Lux: Illuminated ( , )
Malzahar is the self-proclaimed Voice of the Foreglow. Traveling from realm to realm, he announces that the Empyreans are symptoms of a greater sickness, the fever designed to fight an infection festering across the dimensions. Whether Malzahar truly speaks for the neon flame is anyone's guess, but for now, he's only just warming up.
A nightmarish dimensional parasite, Nocturne was drawn to the Foreglow and—as it burrowed its way to the power's raw form—inadvertently created the first dimensional collapse and the first Empyrean, Pyke. With the Foreglow corrupting its original appearance, Nocturne seeks to experiment further with the Foreglow and find new ways to feed its hunger.
Pyke remembers little before falling into the embrace of the Foreglow, only that he was defending his home. Waking in a new realm as the first Empyrean, he hears the whispers of other Pykes across the dimensions, taunting him from their homes. Why was his lost and not theirs? No answer will satisfy his searing rage, except vengeance.
The first Empyrean to awake, Pyke remembers little but snatches of a destroyed homeland. Nothing can replace what he has lost, but killing every ungrateful, ignorant version of himself seems like a good enough place to start.
"Pyke kills, Pyke kills, Pyke kills... Pyke." ( )
Having lost his family, Varus was already consumed by vengeance when his realm collapsed. Not only did he survive, due to Nocturne's meddling, but two visiting Empyreans, Kai and Valmar, were absorbed into his bow. With the Foreglow stoking his rage, Varus vows to wipe out every last Empyrean, no matter what his new "friends" say.
Vex didn't need anyone. Growing up alone, she was self-sufficient and annoyed by most people. Her realm's destruction barely made her blink, but her new Empyrean powers did give her an idea. By empowering her own shadow, she finally had a companion she tolerated. Vex may not need anyone, but then again, misery loves company.
The destruction of Vex's world was the best thing that ever happened to her. Now she is finally free of annoyance, except for that pesky shadow that still follows her from realm to realm...
"Color? Yeah, I'm not about that."
"This is my realm-incinerating stare." - Empyrean Vex ( , )
The Foreglow affects everyone differently. For Zac, it burned away all of his insecurities, but opened up his senses to the loneliness felt by the other Zacs across the realms. They needed him, and now he has the power to bring everyone together as one. A family reunion for the ages.
The Foreglow is a power many desire, but Zed resents how it exposes him. His is a strength born from darkness, away from prying eyes. Perhaps in the fallen Husk realm left in Pyke's wake can he build a new domain of shadows, one that no Empyrean can topple.
Though it grants him immense power, Zed finds the light of the Foreglow repugnant. As other Empyreans rampage through one realm after another, he searches for a Husk world from which he can build a true empire of shadows.
"We are the shadows cast by the burning realms." - Empyrean Zed ( )
