Barakpur
Barakpur (bărˈəkpôr), city, West Bengal state, NE India, on the Hugli River. The city is a military station. Fifteen miles (24 km) from Kolkata (Calcutta), it was formerly the suburban residence of the British viceroys of India; a well-known park stands on the site. Bengali troops in Barakpur mutinied in 1824 when ordered to participate in the Burmese War. The Indian Mutiny of 1857 also began there. The city was formerly spelled Barrackpore.
