ATVEF

(Advanced Television Enhancement Forum) A consortium of broadcast, cable and computer companies founded in 1998 that developed the ATVEF Enhanced Content Specification, an HTML and JavaScript-based format for adding content to interactive TV. ATVEF closed at the end of 1999 and turned over the specification to the ATV Forum and SMPTE.

In its short year and a half history, ATVEF compiled a collection of intellectual property from its members about interactive TV that provides a wealth of information about content creation and distribution. After ATVEF's closing, this technology continued to be made available from ATVEF Licensing LLC in Boulder, CO. See ATV Forum.

By not being at the ATVEF demonstration, the government possibly avoided being embarrassed by probing questions to which they couldn't provide adequate answers yet.
Each of the ATVEF representatives offered a tailored presentation: Intel, as the developer of computer chips housed in television broadcast and receiving equipment; Microsoft, as the supplier of software product; and NetGem, as the manufacturer of set-top boxes that allow TV sets to both receive digital-TV broadcasts and to connect to the Internet.
To some of the participants present in Giulianova, such as Franco Visintin, chairman of the Italian chapter of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), the ATVEF protocol does not go far enough, especially when considering all its potential.
On October 22, ATVEF will demonstrate its Internet Protocol (IP) in the Italian beach resort of Giulianova, a short distance east of Rome.
In the past, ATVEF has demonstrated its open standard to engineers in the U.K., Germany, France and Holland.
Being a universal platform, ATVEF enables a TV signal that is digitized and encoded with the ATVEF specification (an Internet protocol) to be delivered by analog and digital terrestrial broadcast, DTH (satellite), ADSL (large-band telephone lines), cable-TV systems and, in the future, cellular phone circuits.
The ATVEF specification relies on existing Web standards like HTML, JavaScript and multicast IP to create programming that takes advantage of minimal new technology, making these standards useful in any television service environment.
* Low Cost: As programmers are able to rely on existing tools and an expert pool of creative resources, the ATVEF specification provides a cost-effective base for extending beyond today's Web sites and into the realm of network programming.
Among the original 14 companies that founded ATVEF were Warner Bros., Discovery, Intel, Microsoft and BBC Today, the ATVEF membership consists of 30 associates from the U.S., Canada and Europe.
