Painkiller: Lost Alpha is a modification for the original game and the Battle Out of Hell expansion. The concept is simple: a recreation of an early game version, the one that the developers of People Can Fly originally conceived in 2002-2003. Lost Alpha returns cut and early content, recreates developers unrealized ideas, and uses material that has not been used. However, this is not the only thing: like any other mod, LA also tries to provide a good gaming experience, fix the original game bugs and give new impressions.

The goal of Lost Alpha modification is to show as much cut-out content as possible in one form or another, without impairing the gaming experience. The modification does not try to recreate old atmosphere and be
similar to any of the early game versions, does not try to comply with any canons. Therefore, there is a lot of authorial content in the modification used for reconstruction - how else can one or another cut-out thing be returned with only a meager textual description?

As a result, Lost Alpha is a synthesis of various developers ideas from different eras: from the earliest from 2002 to the latest from 2004. He pieced together almost everything that was known about the early version, and implemented everything that could be implemented from it.

Riot:

Have you ever thought about mods crossover? For example, when can a level from one mod be played in another mod? Well, if so, then try the Riot custom level straight from the Reloverdose modification in Lost Alpha! Riot has been carefully moved while maintaining the original gameplay and balance, except that minor improvements have been made (if you hear "choo-choo, choo-choo" - look up) and two new secrets have been added.

Before downloading the level, make sure that you have the latest version of the mod with today's hotfix installed!

Starting a level:
1. Launch the game;
2. Click Sign the Pact;
3. Click Custom Levels;
3. Select the difficulty level;
4. Start the LAC_Riot level.

Have a nice game!

A couple of suggestions, complaints and questions:

1. There is no "Graphics Settings" option. Fast, standard, etcetera...

2. There is no option to disable bloom in-game.

3. The nun enemies move too quickly. It looks silly.

4. Some of the ninja enemies move too quickly. Again, it looks silly.

5. The red hell angel enemies never appear. Will they come back?

6. Enemies who are frozen remain frozen far too short.

7. The shotgun looks awful. Will there be a way to change it to the release version?

8. The HellGun has too little max ammo for it's primary attack. There is also too little ammo to pick up for it and it has too much screen shaking when firing it's primary attack.

9. The DBGunAlpha looks awful in first person. One can only barely see the barrels and nothing else.

10. Will there be an option to change the look of the stakes on the StakeGunGL to the release version?

11. The MiniGunRL looks inferior to the release version and it's animations when moving are wonky.

12. There is too little ammo for the NailDriverAG.

13. The RifleFlameThrower's secondary attack fire effect makes it more difficult too see where the player is aiming.

14. Will there be an option to make the demon morph function like it does originally?

15. The new hud looks inferior to the release version. Also, it does not point to the enemies and checkpoints and it is harder to see how much ammo the player has.

16. Will there be an option to have the armor and ammo pickups have their release version models and sounds as they are much better. The armor in particular looks bad and out of place.

17. Will there be an option to have the release version startlevel sound?

18. Will there be an option to make the enemies leave souls when they disappear like in the release version? Frankly, they are more satisfying to pick up.

19. Will there be an option to have the release startup logo?

20. Will there be an option to have the release black tarot cards and the new ones?

21. Will there be an option to have the release looking black tarot cards? Namely, the haste cards?

22. Will it be possible to play all the levels on all difficulty settings?

23. Will the original campaign have the RifleFlameThrower and BoltGunHeater be available in more than just secret areas?

24. The C5L1_City_on_the_Water_Fight theme is awful. Will it be replaced?

25. The slave enemies look awful.

26. The blood effects on the screen when the player takes damage are sometimes annoying. Especially when there are hitscanners.

27. Will it be possible to have the release version menu sounds and map sounds?

28. When going into "Sign the Pact", the "Painkiller" and "Painkiller Battle out of Hell" options look different. Will it be possible to have them look like their release versions?

29. Rocket jumping sends the player far too high up.

30. Will it be possible to replace the health packs with the yellow souls?

31. Will it be possible to change the atmosphere and skyboxes of the levels to their release versions and have an option that randomly choses the atmosphere and skyboxes of levels?

32. Will you add back the demon morphing that occurs when the player kills a boss?

33. In the Stalingrad level, the German and Soviet soldiers do not attack each other even though the manual says they should.

34. Will you create the ice wallow level and add it to Painkiller: Lost Alpha?

Didn't know that Painkiller's alpha/beta content was salvaged in someway. Although, I never actively searched for it, as such, playing this mod felt like a slightly changed original campaign. That is not to say that it's a bad thing, it's just that for a less knowledgeable person on this topic, it's hard to appreciate the mod fully. Still, for what it's worth the work done here clearly shows skill in this game's modding. I haven't progressed too far, yet, got distracted by other things, but judging by everything I've seen so far, it promises to be good. If there's one complain, that I would have to suck out of my thumb, it would be the usage of some of the tracks. Pretty sure I've heard Black Mesa ost in the main menu, along with other tracks that don't fit the vibe of "old", of "something we could've gotten if the game came out a year or two earlier", you get what I mean, right? Anyway, looking forward for future updates.

I'm glad you like the work we've done! There will be more interesting content during the walkthrough. I would appreciate it if you write a review after walkthrough.

About some changes: as indicated in the mod description, not all changes relate to early content, since this approach does not work, so for a better gaming experience, we had to change the paradigm.

Yes, I'll leave a review after playing through it, might take awhile though, since for now the priority shifted to Reload mod. While I'm at it, one other thing that I remember happening, is a 50/50 chance of whether the game gonna crash or not after death, while in the aforementioned Reload mod no such thing ever occurred. It wasn't such a big deal, but I can imagine it being in some of the later levels. Hopefully it will be fix, that's like, the only sort of big gripe I had with it for now.

This is a known game engine problem, when a crash may occur at a random moment. This happens in any game in the series and any mod on this engine. If you didn't encounter this in Reload, then you're lucky, because I personally encountered it in this mod. So, in the last update, I tried to improve the game stability as much as possible.

*one of the devs here*
Personally, I was not responsible for all decisions made in this mod. But I can definitely say that a lot of time and effort was invested here. There is still a lot to be done, but we are already happy with the current result. If you have gone through ‘not so much’, then the next one will be the juice.

Stay tuned, new content is being developed right now.
We occasionally post... Stuff to the fan discord server on the game. You can check it out there.
