About

FX:Galaxy, also known as the FXmod, is a long-term modification project for the Homeworld series that aims to tell the story of the franchise's eight main races in one game. Started back in 2003, FX:Galaxy continues the legacy of its HW2C predecessor while at the same time tapping into the new modding possibilities that came with the 2015 Remaster.

Our goal is to recreate the raw excitement vibe of the original 1999 game in the remaster. At the same time we seek to polish, enhance and expand on the regular Homeworld experience, and do many new things that push the boundaries of the Homeworld engine - all while paying close attention to the lore, and making sure the game still is (and feels) 'Homeworld'.   • 8 Playable Races: All eight races from HW1 & HW2 are available as fully playable factions. Continue your adventure as one of the overhauled stock factions (Hiigaran/Vaygr/Taiidan/Kushan), or come see how we brought player favorites like the Progenitors, Kadeshi, Turanic Raiders and Bentusi (WIP) to life!
  • More Strategy, More Challenges: All factions come with their own unique units, abilities and playing styles, bringing a vast amount of new strategical options to the table. Unit abilities play a bigger role, and with a greatly improved AI the galaxy is more dangerous a place than ever before. Will you rise to the challenge and draw out your faction's full potential?
  • New Content: Continue to explore the Homeworld Universe in 5 new Single-Player Missions, hone your skills in 2 unique Challenge Modes (Skirmish/Survival), or spice up the new 8-faction experience even further with 3 new Gameplay Modes (Competitive Deathmatch/Artifact Retrieval/Bentusi Defense) and 10+ new Maps - with more to come.
  • Unique Features: Our drive to innovate has led us to push the boundaries of the Homeworld Engine for over 15 years. Customize the in-game BGM with our HW Music Player, discover the FXmod via our own Achievements System, Name your Ships, or co-operate with AI players like they were human players via a reputation-based AI Diplomacy System - and much more.   • 40+ New (HD) Units: Some of these are realizations of original Homeworld concept art, others were designed by us from scratch based off that race's lore and aesthetic. Summon the newly discovered Progenitor Frigates or Kadeshi Nagual from the voids of space, unleash new gamechangers like the Turanic HeavyGun Cruiser and Taiidan Battleship, or check out our take on old favorites - such as a re-textured version of the Turanic Outpost from HW:Cataclysm.
    Note: Since the FXmod was originally a HW2C project some units still use HW2+ textures. You can view our remastering progress [here].
  • Enhanced Graphics & FX: New Animations (e.g. Turanic smoke, Progenitor energy), Weapon FX (e.g. Ion Beams, Kadeshi energy weapons), Subsystem Models, Blueprints, Sounds, a tweaked HWRM Shader, and much more for prying eyes (and ears!) to discover.
  • Vanilla Improvements: Tweaks to existing units (e.g. HGN Bombers can now rotate their turrets to attack from any angle as originally intended), removal/merging of obsolete units, overhauled Research & Production trees and other, ever-ongoing balance adjustments.
  • Newbie Friendly: We all have to start somewhere. Our own Tutorial Missions will help you get started, and our 33-stage Challenge Mode ("The Shimmering Path") will let you hone you skills as you go. You'll find various other aides in-game, on ModDB (FX Strategy Guide), and of course our Discord!
  • Supports LAN, Multiplayer, and direct TCP/IP.

Under Development..

  • RPG Mode: Our most ambitious project yet, our ultimate goal is to create a unique spin on the traditional Single-Player mode that turns Homeworld into a sandbox-themed 4X RPG. Live travel between maps via special hyperspace gates that 'connect' all maps in real time, receive and complete missions from NPCs, purchase or assemble units and do many other things, just like in a real RPG game. You may even encounter units from past FXmod releases or other mods as special NPCs (easter eggs).

    Overall, we intend to create a "living galaxy", that lets you both experience new stories, explore, and experience daily life in the Homeworld universe all at once.
  • More HD Models: We continue to upgrade our unit textures and models to HWRM quality, as well as design brand new units in full HD. You can periodically see previews of these in our [Images] section. We also intend to further polish and improve our custom animations, fx, and everything else that make it all look prettier.
  • More Content: Our third goal is to create additional mini-campaigns, and to ultimately have one for each race in the mod. Besides these you can look forward to additional gameplay modes, maps, achievements, and more.

Greetings everyone,

A lot has been said about HW3, and a lot of thought has been given to the topic of the future of the FXmod. Today I bring you the answer, and a final gift related to the Shimmering Path.

After weighing the modding tools and potential of HW3, we have decided that the FXmod will continue to be developed on Homeworld3.

One of the main reasons for this is that we had already hit the limits of what we can do on the HWRM engine. We hit the memory limit (no more races), had to write many additional scripts to get everything to work, and old issues from the HW2C days (Out of Sync) prevented us from truly delivering on the Multiplayer aspect of our mod. So, while we think that we were able to add a lot for the Single-Player fans, such as the Shimmering Path and new mini-campaigns, we are sorry for those that were hoping for a more sustained Multiplayer environment like in the HW2C days of the mod, when it was still called FX:Commander. In the end, we just couldn't get it to work.

What will happen now?

  • There will be no more releases for the FXmod on HWRM. The v1.39 build "Last Stand" is the last release for HWRM.
  • This ModDB page and the FX 1.39 download will remain online, but no more updates will be posted.
  • Once we have made sufficient progress with a HW3 version of the mod, we will make a ModDB page for it and post an update about it here.

Parting Gift: Unlocking all Shimmering Path (EX/Bonus) Stages

To thank everyone for all the support, messages and more over the years, we have prepared one final gift for you: We will show you how to manually unlock all stages of The Shimmering Path, so that you can also see the Hall of Fame, play any missions you didn't get to, and of course try out the bonus (EX) stages. These stages have unique scenarios and maps, that are not used anywhere else in the mod. We hope that you will enjoy them!

To unlock all Shimmering Path stages, first navigate to this folder:

*\Homeworld\HomeworldRM\Bin\Profiles\
  1. Select the "Profile" folder of the profile you want to unlock all Shimmering Path stages on (your main/first profile is named "PROFILE1").
  2. Locate "PLAYERCFG.lua" within this Profile folder > open this file with Notepad/Wordpad.
  3. Inside the Playercfg.lua file, look for "fx_path". You'll want the entry with the entire mission list below it - it tends to be near the bottom of the file.
  4. Within this entry, locate the "started =" and "scenario =" lines, and change these values to the following:

started = 1,
scenario = 37,

If you did it right, it should look like this:

Save and exit. The next time you launch the FXmod, scroll to the bottom of the Shimmering Path to see the new stages!

Right now, we are already researching how to mod on Homeworld3.

Modding HWRM was a journey with ups and downs. But the support of the players made us do our best, and encouraged us to push the limits of the engine as we sought to provide a memorable gameplay experience.

With FX v1.39, the most complete and stable build that we have ever released, we know that we have left the FXmod for HWRM in a good place for those who will not be making the jump to HW3 and will be sticking to HWRM.

For the next few months we will be thinking about what shape the FXmod should take in HW3, and in what direction we want to take the project as we study the new possibilities.

Did you setup the shortcut exactly according to the instructions? Numbers appearing as text is usually a sign the English text file failed to load properly. Is your game language also set to English?

Your TARGET field is missing english.big. This file was also included with the download, so assuming it is in the same location as FXGtest.big your TARGET field should look like this:
C:\GOG Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release\HomeworldRM.exe" -mod FXGtest.big,english.big

I will however add that it is best to install the FXmod according to the readme that comes with the download. In the past mods were typically dropped in Homeworld's \Data folder, but in the current version of the remaster it's better to use the Steam folder structure (dropping mod files into your "HomeworldRM\DataWorkshopMODs" folder).

Hope this worked for you, if not please do a fresh install of the mod according to the readme file included with the download.

Wait i dont know if i read it right, but is this mod capable of letting me use the taiidan ships sets during the whole campaing? if that so, then i was looking to something like this since forever.

Not quite. This mod essentially makes all main races from Homeworld playable in vs. CPU/Multiplayer and adds stuff like new units, gameplay modes, etc.

We have however previously worked on making the Taiidan playable in the HW1 campaign, but I really can't tell you if it still works since it dates back to pre-2.0 HWRM: Steamcommunity.com

aaaahhh thats a shame mate!, the first thing i though when running that dammed new remaster was "i gonna repeat that playthrough i made as a kid using taiidan ships", when that wasnt possible plus the huuuuge amount of bugs the game had at release, lost the little respect i had left for gearbox, nightdive studios makes better remasters and thats crazy.
