US Vice-President Joe Biden has proposed for the Iraqi pipeline to Nabucco to run from Akkas northward to Kurdistan where the gas will be mixed with Kurdistan's stream and pumped to Turkey through a pipeline to be built from the Kurdistan-Turkish border.

Earlier this year the ministry said it would follow two oil auctions held last year with a gas idding round, offering three non-associated gas fields Akkas in the western Anbar province, Mansuriyah in the northern province of Diyala and Siba in the southern province of Basra for evelopment by foreign oil and gas companies.

The countries have discussed construction of a gas pipeline from Iraq's western Akkas fields to Syria.

According to The Moscow Times "[...] Syria began receiving gas from Egypt this year through a pipe that crosses Jordan and plans to import gas from Iraq's Akkas field, which is close to the border, by 2010.

Mukhtar al-Ani, an Iraqi oil consultant, said: "In early January, the Ministry of Oil held talks with a number of potential companies regarding development of the huge Akkas gas field in the north-western desert of Anbar province."

The gas will come from the Akkas field, in Iraq's western desert near the Syrian border, which is yet to be developed, and would eventually be linked up with the Nabucco pipeline to Central Europe through Turkey (see gmt19TurkPipelinesMay5-08).
