If you do not begin your save as a Gunslinger or you respec one of the Origin characters to Gunslinger you will need to use a tutorial chest mod to get the appropriate weapons.
CHANGE (ALL) - Weapons unique to a subclass, such as the Gunzerker gunblade or the Dirge Revolvers are only able be equipped by that subclass.
CHANGE (ALL) - Dirge, Way of the Gun, Gun Mage, and Gun Saint firearms have their own shot effects. If you prefer to have a more subdued shot effect you can use the basic Gunslinger weapons. They will roll attacks using your spellcasting ability, or DEX if you are Way of the Gun.

Long overdue overhaul to weapons. CHANGE - The upgrade boxes and tiered versions of Gunslinger weapons no longer drop in the world. They have not been deleted because that would cause save game crashes. Recommend replacing the old weapons with the new scaling weapons ASAP. CHANGE - All Gunslinger weapons now level with you up to +3 quality. Legendary stats weapons are found later in Act 3. CHANGE - Leveling Gunslinger weapons can be found in all three Acts. The Gunslingers
The Gunslinger is a DEX/CHA ranged combatant. This subclass is a medium armored fighter/ranger hybrid that has access to ranged Battle Master abilities.
The Dirge uses CHA/DEX and plays like a bard and shares many similarities with the Necromancer. It even gets access to Wizard/Necromancer subclass passives at later levels. You might consider this subclass as being a Necromancy Lore Bard.
The Gunbreaker uses STR/CON and is a defensive high mobility skirmisher that focuses on controlling and harassing enemies. With a wide variety of ammo types, the Gunbreaker has a shot for every occasion.
Gunjitsu: The Way of the Gun uses DEX/WIS and is a practicioner of subterfuge and specializes in dispatching enemies quickly and quietly.
Gunzerker is a STR/CON combatant who strikes down upon their enemies with great vengeance and furious anger.
Gun Saint is a DEX/WIS support class that heals and support their friends while controlling and debilitating their enemies with imbued firearm abilities.
Gun Mage is a DEX/INT magical damage class that imbues their firearms with devastating spell effects.
