It's a fabulous record. A unique kind of Various Artists tribute album where its 11 songs - not a bad one among them. .... In All, delightful. [Aug 2024, p.80]

Thompson’s writing gives this stellar cast plenty to work with, her wit rising to such meta conceits as “John Grant”, on which John Grant sings of Thompson’s fondness for him, and “Those Damn Roches”, on which Teddy Thompson conveys the tempestuousness of musical dynasties – including his (and his mum’s) own. [Jul 2024, p.39]

There’s an ethereal feel, something that transcends the boundaries of folk, a gentleness yet something more, helped by the guitar of Richard.

There’s no wallowing in self pity on Proxy Music. Instead it serves as a celebration of one of folk’s most talented figures, and it’s great to hear that Linda Thompson has found her voice again, with a little help from her friends.

She clearly wanted an audience to hear these songs, but she also wanted a chance to create with artists she loves and respects, and the joy of creation is matched by the joy of hearing these musicians at work.

It is a strange and sometimes brilliant album—one that only Linda Thompson could have made, whether or not you can hear her singing.

Closer in mood to her often wintry folk-rock past are I Used to Be So Pretty, voiced by Ren Harvieu, and Three Shaky Ships, boasting the immaculate harmonies of the Unthanks. Eliza Carthy, John Grant and Martha Wainwright are also on hand for a moving celebration of lives well lived.
