The first half is very atmospheric, horror-like, mysterious and fascinating, but then it transforms into some cheap, supposedly 'feministic' (but in reality calling it that would be a stretch) Supernatural-like story. It's just very disappointing. And boring. I practically skimmed over last fifth or so.
It has three main characters, but only one of them, Val, is well written. It's like Legrand put everything in her and didn't have time/energy/ideas for her two other MCs. Relationships between them were written lazily and absolutely unconvincingly.
This book was hyped so much and maybe my expectations were way too high, but it ended up disappointing me entirely....more

The tense, creepy atmosphere (magnified by the audiobook which was great), the anxiousness, not obvious plot, unapologetic and gray characters the author didn't try hard the readers to like... And the ending destroyed it all. (view spoiler)[I'm not against open endings, I quite like them if they suit the story, but this is not a case of an open ending suiting the story. Power left too many unanswered questions, too many loose ends and subplots not resolved... I was surprised to find out there wouldn't be a sequel. Honestly it looked like there were a few more chapters they forgot to add to the book. (hide spoiler)]...more
A z wątkiem z prześladowca Osińska odleciała totalnie... Mimo to na pewno przeczytam kolejna część, bo wiem, że to debiut, i liczę na to, że autorka się poprawiła, a do tego pod koniec zaczęłam lubić głównych bohaterów, choć początkowo wydawali mi się nieznośni....more

I'm also glad this one didn't change my love for Ronan, I WOULD STILL DIE FOR HIM. I need another book to warm up to the new characters, though....more

It was just extremely boring. It's full of angst and making out and then some more angst and making out with no real plot to it. The characters are one dimentional, it's embarrassingly cheesy (I like a bit of cheesiness like everyone, but here... My cholesterol level is off the charts), the Grey storyline is so bad I don't even want to dwell on this, and the writing is repetitive and mediocre.
Nevertheless I think I'll read Winters' next book, because I know debuts can be tricky and I want to give his writing another chance....more

I was worried I would get lost in the world as I watched only one season of Buffy and have only vague idea of how the world works, but it's all explained so well you'll be good even if you only know there was some girl named Buffy who was slaying vampires.
I loved the characters and how they interacted with each other (the only exception being Artemis, oh how I hated that girl from start to finish...). My absolute fave was Cillian, I want more of him in the next book!
The humour was on point. Filled with pop-culture references, never cringe-worthy. I actually laughed out loud a few times and that NEVER happens (E U R O V I S I O N).

That's third Backman's book I've read and that's third time he made me cry. I just love his stories, his characters and the way he makes everything so gray instead of black and white, which would have been so much easier. Also, he must absolutely hate his characters, to cause them so much pain!
Again the beginning was very slow and a little boring, I also didn't love the Peter and Kira storyline, but then the plot became more and more enthralling. Definitely one of best books I've read last year....more

Some chapters were great, engaging and filled with funny dialogue, but others were simply boring and they dragged on and on and on... Especially the ending which was going on for about a hundred pages.
The main plot is build on the fact that the reader knows more than the characters and I absolutely hate it. I stopped caring about this whole thing about halfway through it and it became simply tiresome. And all those coincidences? I have nothing against using a coincidence in a plot, but when it happens about fifteen times in a single book... Just stop it. It's laughable.
I wouldn't say it's definitely a bad book, as I enjoyed it from time to time, but I really don't understand all those rave reviews....more

WHAT A STORY.
I must admit I didn't like it at first. The story dragged on, I had absolutely no idea where it was going and there were about a million characters that I couldn't start caring about, but about 45% in it all changed (and I read the rest in one sitting). And looking back at those chapters I'd found boring at the time of reading I see now their importance (building the characters in a way reader then would understand their actions and behaviour, showing Beartown as a specific community and how it would act if something unexpected happened).
