The main problem witWhat a huge disappointment. Even listening to the audiobook couldn't save this one from being one of the bost boring novels ever.
The main problem with it is that it's written as if it were a collection of transcripts from interviews. It just doesn't work. There's a reason why most of biographies are written as if they were novels, with normal dialogues and narration straight out of fiction (I hope you know what I mean). It wouldn't be so bad if the actual story was great, but it was sooooo boring, repetitive and just... ugh. Who would've thought a novel about 70s rock band would be so bland and predictive. And that big revelation that didn't change anything in the story? Come on, it was just bad....more

Some chapters were great, engaging and filled with funny dialogue, but others were simply boring and they dragged on and on and on... Especially the ending which was going on for about a hundred pages.
The main plot is build on the fact that the reader knows more than the characters and I absolutely hate it. I stopped caring about this whole thing about halfway through it and it became simply tiresome. And all those coincidences? I have nothing against using a coincidence in a plot, but when it happens about fifteen times in a single book... Just stop it. It's laughable.
I wouldn't say it's definitely a bad book, as I enjoyed it from time to time, but I really don't understand all those rave reviews....more

It's what I imagine real spies' work looked like in the 60. A little boring, perhaps, without constant twists, betrayals and deaths, but interesting all the same .
A great piece of historical fiction with a well written mc. I just wish the author explored it even more, added a few more subplots to enrich the story....more
'The Gustav Sonata' is as melancholic as it can get, full of sorrow and characters hard to like. Seems like a perfect read for me, but unfortunately i'The Gustav Sonata' is as melancholic as it can get, full of sorrow and characters hard to like. Seems like a perfect read for me, but unfortunately it wasn't.
The book is divided en three parts; the first one, about the sad childhood of Gustav, was great, the second one was okay and the final one was a mistake. I found it hard to believe the motivations of the characters, they all were behaving very unnatural to me. The story didn't have anything that would make it interesting and to be honest I didn't stop reading just because I loved the first part and hoped the ending would be great too. It wasn't. It lacked emotional depth, some events described were just random, not important at all to the story and the characters became the caricatures of themselves. ...more
