The mystery was weak, simple and boring, tbh I skimmed through some of the chapters, because it just dragged on and on and on, the story was repetitive and I couldn't start caring about any of the characters. Frank as a MC and narrator was a huge disaster. I just wanted to punch him in the face most of the time (like every time he condescendly called a woman a "sweetheart" or "babe" or acted as if he were the smartest person in the whole world... give me a break). I also figured Sadie was supposed to die at the very beginning, when it was mentioned for the first time she was the one who was the homecoming queen: it was just too obvious and I wish McManus wouldn't go there for some cheap thrill to end the book. I liked the characters, but Ezra? He was completly redundant to the story, he had no arc, no subplot, NOTHING and it's such a shame. If he didn't exist, it wouldn't change a thing in the whole story....more

It was just too boring, full of excruciatingly long and repetitive passages about relationships, full of stereotypes and misogyny. If you want to know how I feel about this book, read this review, it captures my thoughts perfectly. I just wanted to add that Cormoran Strike is a shitty person and portraying him as a good one is something I can't understand.
It got a little interesting about 60%% in, when it started to be more about the mystery and less about main characters' love lives, but the ending felt overcomplicated and disappointing.

I rarely read thriller books, but even I was able to notice that 'Bonfire' relies on recycled cliches of the genre, the plot twists are obvious and the main character written very badly. Seriously, I even liked Abbey, with all her imperfections, but she's erratic, jumps to conlusions and for a person that doesn't trust anyone is surprisingly gullible.
There are two cases to solve, one, actual, about a environmental violation, which is painstakingly boring; the second, involving the disappearance of Abbey's childhood friend and then enemy, actually got me interested, but the outcome was obvious. The ending is rushed and schematic, nothing memorable. ...more

So, about that. (view spoiler)[The decision of not giving the readers answers about the case from the past, the one much more interesting than the new one, for me is hugely disappointing. I've read the author's explanation, but to be honest it doesn't seem right to me. I'd understand it if it were a book about entirely something else and the trauma from the past were just a thing looming over the mc, never to be solved or explained. But it's a crime book, we get possible leads on this one and leaving it unsolved is simply cruel. I feel like the author just couldn't think of a good explanation, so she left it like that. "A Study in Charlotte" wasn't a great book, but it was ok, I'd enjoyed it, and I didn't expect this one to be such a mess.
I liked Charlotte and Jamie in the first book, but here... Charlotte's so mean and condescending it's impossible to have any sympathy for her and Jamie's jealousy and pettiness made me want to slap him unconscious. Their relationship is toxic and I don't see how the reader could want them to be together, because they're so bad for each other it's unbelievable. Why couldn't Cavallaro just made them friends? This whole book is an unnecesary, cringy teen melodrama.
And the plot... What plot? It was a mess, it was tiresome and boring. And the big twist at the end? Just some more melodrama. Nope....more

The author treats her readers like they're dumb, constantly repeating the same info and giving 'hints' that are more like a blow with a hammer to the face. I was practically laughing at the shocking revelations at the end...
Furthermore, this book is just plain boring, full of academic descriptions of a mental illness (seriously, 'doing a research' doesn't mean you need to shove everything you find on the topic in, that's unnecessary) and constant repetitions.
