Matthew McConaughey shows off brutal bee sting leaving his right eye completely shut and swollen

Matthew McConaughey got his fans buzzing with concern on Wednesday as he  showed off a brutal bee sting that caused his right eye to swell and shut completely.

The 54-year-old Texas native posted the alarming snap to his 9.8M Instagram followers with the simple caption: 'bee swell.'

Despite the painful injury, the A Time to Kill star appeared to be in good spirits and even managed a smile for the camera.

It is currently unclear how the actor fell afoul of the insect.

The Oscar-winner has been hard at work recently completing his next big project, the crime thriller The Rivals Of Amziah King.

While details of the plot have been kept under wraps, DailyMail.com obtained pictures of McConaughey in character last year carrying boxes of honey.

Honey-producing bees can cause severe inflammation and complications like keratitis, optic neuritis, and glaucoma when they sting someone near the eye.

McConaughey was seen shooting the movie in Alabama last June, but it has since concluded filming and is now in post-production, according to IMDb

The project stars him amid a high-profile cast including Kurt Russell, Riverdale star Cole Sprouse and Black Mirror actor Owen Teague.

McConaughey previously sustained a work injury in 2008, cutting his face so badly he needed stitches while training for a fighter movie called The Grackle.

Directed by David O. Russell, who later made Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, The Grackle was ultimately never completed.

Over the course of his career, McConaughey has not shied away from facing down fearsome animals, even petting a live tiger for his 2016 thriller Gold.

'We shot that in New Mexico as the last scene of the movie, and I don’t think that’s coincidental. If something happened during that scene, they wouldn’t need me on the screen anymore,' he joked to Vulture.

There were limits even to his daring, however - the tiger scene was initially meant to be shot in Thailand but was postponed out of caution.

'We didn’t quite trust that tiger as much as we trusted the tiger in New Mexico,' McConaughey explained. 'The Thai tiger was cheaper, but he was funky, man. He had been caught out of the wild, like, yesterday.'

He confessed that in the run-up to the shoot of the tiger scene, he and his family 'were all kinda nervous and excited at the same time,' in the sense that McConaughey's loved ones 'know I like to get off to that kind of buzz.'

His fear contributed to the realism of the scene, as 'When you see me sweating there and saying: "I’m touchin' a tiger," I didn’t have to act that. That was live,' he noted.

'But trust me, I didn’t sit there touching that tiger’s head for a while. My heart was pounding pretty steady. What a great way to finish the last day of shooting.'
