Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman get candid on 'sexual tension' between their characters in Deadpool & Wolverine as director Shawn Levy weighs in

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's onscreen chemistry in Deadpool & Wolverine is undeniable, even bordering on the flirtatious.

The co-stars hilariously dished on their characters' 'sexual tension' in the upcoming superhero film during their interview for Variety on Wednesday.

Given that Reynolds' Deadpool is famously pansexual, the duo was asked if the Marvel superhero felt any 'sexual chemistry or tension' with his cohort Wolverine (Jackman).

'I can't speak for Wolverine, but I feel like Deadpool has sexual tension with everything and everyone,' Reynolds, 47, joked, as Jackman, 55, chimed in, 'Don't deny this is special.'

Reynolds added, 'You’re right. I feel it right now. My God, like two magnets facing the wrong direction.'

Deadpool & Wolverine's director Shawn Levy weighed in, referring to Deadpool's alter ego Wade Wilson.

'Wade is a fan of the Wolverine. He drives [Wolverine] crazy off-screen and on. But there’s a reverence. There’s a fanboy love,' he said.

Ryan also gushed about working with Hugh on their first collaboration, 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

'Hugh was a huge influence on me. It was the first time I saw how a movie star operates on set, and it defied all the preconceived notions for a movie star, he explained.

'He was so warm and welcoming. He made it safe to play. He knew every single person’s name.'

Last week, Ryan and Hugh launched the press tour for the new film in Shanghai.

Long-time friends Hugh and Ryan often take part in a jokey rivalry, which began back more than a decade ago during Ryan's marriage to his first wife Scarlett Johansson from 2008 until 2011.

Hugh told Daily Beast in 2020: 'It's gone back so long now... God, this is a classic sign where your feud has gone too long, where you don't even know why or how it started!

'I met him back on Wolverine, and I used to ream him because I was very close friends with Scarlett,' he added.

'Scarlett had just married Ryan, so when he came on set I was like, 'Hey, you better be on your best behaviour here, pal, because I'm watching', and we started ribbing each other that way.'

Things then 'escalated' when Ryan took on the role of Deadpool, proving to be a rival to Hugh's beloved portrayal of Wolverine, with their characters meeting in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009).

Since then, the pair have continued to poke fun and troll each other on social media, never shying away from an opportunity to hilariously prank the other.

'There's no doubt it's a lot of fun because let's face it, it's one of the great – it should be an Olympic sport – trolling Ryan Reynolds,' Hugh joked.

'I'm pretty sure I'll be out there for the gold, but I think everyone would enjoy the sport. I think every kid should do it.'

They are soon set to bring their friendly rivalry to the big screen, starring opposite each other in the upcoming Marvel epic Deadpool & Wolverine.

Hugh has played Wolverine ever since 2000's X-Men and his journey came to a close in the 2017 movie Logan, which was set in 2029 where mutants are nearly extinct.

However, Hugh is now reprising his role for the upcoming release, which will not alter the events of Logan or his emotional death as it occurs in a different timeline.

Earlier this week, Ryan and Hugh, who have remained close friends since their first collaboration in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, launched the press tour for the new film in Shanghai

'Because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines, now we can go back because it's 'science',' Hugh told The Jess Cagle Show in 2022.

'So I don't have to screw with the Logan timeline which was important to me and I think probably to the fans.'

Deadpool & Wolverine is slated for release on July 26 and will see the two superheroes joining forces in an action-packed spectacular.

The trailer has hinted at a rivalry between the pair as they are shown fighting one another in a tense stand-off before reluctantly joining forces in a comedic pairing.
