Queen Mary and King Frederik of Denmark put on a loved-up display as they retire to their summer palace after difficult year filled with marriage rift rumours

The King and Queen of Denmark have retired to their summer palace in Graasten for the first time since being crowned.

Frederik X, 56, and his wife Mary, 52, were mobbed by waiting fans as they made their annual appearance at Graasten Palace, in Jutland, southern Denmark - the home of many of their family portraits.

The King and Queen - who ascended to the throne on January 14, 2024 - attended the summer retreat for the first time as reigning monarchs, and the delightful occasion was well received by royal fans.

The couple looked just as thrilled, as it seemed they couldn't keep their hands off of each other; with Frederik at one point gently placing a hand on his wife's back.

They were all smiles as they posed for cameras - despite their marriage being plagued with rumours of marital struggles since the King was pictured out in Madrid with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova last year.

During today's outing, the Queen took hold of various flower bouquets from well wishers. The royal couple were also welcomed by the mayor Erik Lauritzen.

Mary cut a classy figure in a white summer gown decorated with a green floral pattern and short puffed sleeves.

She teamed the look with a pair of nude open toe heels, which she stylishly matched with the same colour hat. Her accessories of choice were a pair of drop down pearl earrings and gold bracelets.

Her chestnut tresses were styled in loose waves and tucked delicately behind her ears, while her make-up was perfect for the occasion as she sported a dewy base, a glamorous smokey eye and a rose-pink lip.

Meanwhile the King looked suave in a sharp navy blue suit, a crisp white shirt and a blue striped tie. He left his blazer unbuttoned and donned a stylish pair of black loafers to finish.

According to a post made by the royal house's official Instagram page, Their Majesties descended upon a nearly one kilometre walk to the palace, where they greeted citizens of Graasten.

Adults and children alike waved Danish flags and held out camera phones hoping to catch a glimpse of the monarchs.

The walk to Graasten palace in Southern Jutland forms part of a 90-year tradition that sees the royal family gather together for a private summer retreat.

The outing comes as the King and Queen of Denmark looked to be in high spirits as they were welcomed to Igaliku village on the second week of their trip to Greenland

They were all smiles as they chatted with wellwishers, and were greeted with people holding Danish and local flags, with stunning rolling green hills in the background.

Frederik and his wife grinned for photos in matching waterproof ensembles as they explored the south of the island.

The Royals' Instagram account revealed that the couple arrived yesterday and spent the night in the region, where Norse explorer Erik the Red's ship arrived more than 1,000 years ago.

The couple walked to the village along the Kongevejen - a gravel road that takes you from Itilleq to Igaliku, named after Frederik IX who visited in 1952, and is renowned for its stunning views.

Both looked ready for action in hiking ensembles as they trekked along the countryside.

Mary showed off her sporty style in deep green trousers, teamed with a chic cream button-up. Her hair was first styled in loose waves, but the Queen later threw her hair up into a bun.

Meanwhile, Frederik donned black hiking trousers and a light brown hoodie for the outing.

The pair initially sported matching pullovers - Mary's in a forest green and Frederik's in khaki - but took them off as the temperatures warmed.

The Danish royals have been travelling around Greenland since last week. Yesterday, Mary visited a sustainable Naasut institution for children in Nuuk, which translates to 'flower' in Greenlandic.

The summer break comes following a turbulent year for the Danish monarchy which included rumours King Frederik had had an affair (which were strenuously denied) and Queen Margrethe's shock new year abdication.

King Frederik's night out with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova in Madrid last autumn rocked the monarchy.

Snaps of the pair showed them heading to a traditional Flamenco restaurant in the Spanish capital, where Genoveva lives, where Spanish magazine Lecturas reported they dined together until the early hours.

Following publication of the photos, rumours of an affair between the pair circulated - which were strenuously denied by Genoveva.

However cracks begun to appear in Queen Mary and King Frederik's relationship following his night out with Genoveva and the couple, who have been married for 20 years, displayed frosty body language towards each other in public appearances.

But as the royal pair headed off to their summer break, it appeared to be smiles all around.
