Accountant of Court

Accountant of Court

an official in the Scottish legal system charged with overseeing the activities of persons appointed to look after the financial affairs of persons deemed incapable of looking after their own financial welfare in particular estates where there is a disagreement between interested parties and estates which become the property of children under the age of 16 years. The role has been expanded to include that of the Office of the Public Guardian. That office is charged with supervising the operation of those empowered to look after the affairs of adults with incapacity. Issues within the remit include supervision of any guardian or other authorized person in the exercise of his functions relating to the property and financial affairs of the adult concerned, operating registers of documents, dealing with complaints against the various administrators, providing information and advice and liaison with the Mental Welfare Commission and any local authority.
