follow along

1. To do something as others do it. I have no idea how to get out of the stadium, so I'm just following along with the mass of people. Everyone, follow along with the people in front of you—we need to keep the line moving. No one will let me merge over, so I guess I have to follow along with this lane of cars getting on the highway.
2. To trail closely behind someone or something. When you have a toddler, you can always count on them following along with anything you try to do around the house. The interior designer can't get any work done—your puppy follows along with her every movement! Hey, your little brother can't follow along with us to the clubhouse. We have to ditch him somehow.
3. To monitor something in order to keep pace with what someone else is doing. I couldn't quite hear what the actors were saying, so I followed along with the closed captions. This time, I'll do the steps, and you guys try to follow along. I don't know the words by heart, so I would need to follow along with a print-out of the lyrics or something.
