follow (one's) heart

To do what one's feelings or intuition indicate is right. I know I was making a lot of money at that job, but it was so unfulfilling. In the end, I had to follow my heart and pursue a career as an actor. If you don't truly love Zack, then you have to follow your heart and break up with him. I've always wanted to backpack through Europe, and now, I'm finally going to follow my heart and do it!

Fig. to act according to one's feelings; to obey one's sympathetic or compassionate inclinations. I couldn't decide what to do, so I just followed my heart. I trust that you will follow your heart in this matter.
