Atkarsk

 

a city and center of Atkarsk Raion, Saratov Oblast, RSFSR. It is located 92 km northwest of Saratov at the confluence of the Atkara River and the Medveditsa, a left tributary of the Don. A junction of the railroad lines to Saratov, Kalininsk, Vol’sk, and Tambov, Atkarsk has a population of 28,200(1968). Its industries include machinery plants, mainly mining and peat machinery; a mill; an oil-extracting plant; and a knitted-goods factory. Atkarsk was reorganized into a city in 1780 from the village of Itkara (Etkara).
