As the FedEx statement regarding the Amazon contract said, "There is significant demand and opportunity for growth in e-commerce which is expected to grow from 50 million to 100 million packages a day in the U.S.

FedEx issued a one-sentence statement that did not mention Amazon by name, nor described what it planned to do.

FedEx added that Amazon is not its largest customer, as total FedEx revenue attributable to Amazon accounted for less than 1.3% of total FedEx revenue for the 12-month period that ended December 31, 2018.

FedEx Logistics Australia is headquartered in Sydney and also has locations in Melbourne and Brisbane.

"This puts an impossible burden on a common carrier such as FedEx to know the origin and technological make-up of contents of all the shipments it handles and whether they comply" with restrictions, the company said in a statement.
