The SNES port of Doom has just been given the MSU-1 treatment by Sunlitspace542.
A new patch adds CD-quality music, as well as "circlestrafing and the ability to start any episode on any difficulty."
"The tracklist has been replaced with that of the original PC version, so every level has its proper music now," says the developer.
In case you were wondering, the MSU-1 is a custom enhancement chip which allows SNES games to make use of much more data, allowing for vastly improved music.
It's not a 'real' chip and was never featured in any physical SNES games, but has been widely used to augment existing titles with better music.
You can grab the patch here.

The original SNES PCM soundtrack was already pretty great in this version as I recall.
What we could do with is that proposed improvement that would increase the frame rate. Alongside any other QoL features and such.
The SNES could go even further with this port methinks.
“ widely used to augment existing titles with better music”. Technically better, yes. But otherwise it’s subjective. Every MSU patch I’ve heard just doesn't sound right for a SNES game. It sounds like someone’s replaced the music with something different from somewhere else, which is literally what they’ve done. I also think the original SNES soundtrack sounds better compared with the snippet shown above.
The main thing here for me is that it includes circle strafing, and I’m sure it appears to run smoother and faster in the snippet above, but that could just be an illusion from it playing in a little window on a phone screen.
Hm nah it is not worth the space for a recorded Sound Blaster, get the Patch for the Difficulties and play it with the SNES Music, the Music is great.
Idkfa would be worthy for MSU

That's the part that got my attention
Throw in a way to save progress and the Snes port would be just fine.
When I think Doom + CD-Quality Music, I think of the 3DO soundtrack.
I like these kind of projects and I love the original Doom music.
I will say that with the simplified SNES Doom levels, the tragic SNES Doom visuals, and the awful SNES Doom performance, I think the original fart like music of the SNES Doom fits.
@AFourEyedGeek Are you sure you're not thinking of the 32X version? That one had simplified levels and "fart like music", IIRC.
The SNES version was ironically more faithful to the original level designs than the other consoles' ports were, and the worst thing I could say about its music is that the guitar in "At Doom's Gate" sounds like a muffled cello. (So many SNES games had lame instrument samples with no punch to them. Less a technical issue than a stylistic one.) The slower, darker, more atmospheric tracks might even be better than the PC version, but that's a matter of opinion.
