![Doom II Comes To The SNES, Thanks To Fans 1](https://cdn.statically.io/img/images.timeextension.com/e269f76b3a2df/doom-ii-comes-to-the-snes-thanks-to-fans-1.900x.jpg)
It might not be the best version of the game, but the fact that Doom is on the SNES at all is still a technical feat which amazes us.
Sadly for SNES owners, that was as good as it got – until now, that is. The first two levels of its sequel have now been ported to Nintendo's 16-bit console as part of a new project to bring Doom II to the system.
The port has some caveats; as we've noted, it's currently limited to the first two maps from the game. Another issue is that it only uses assets already available in the original Doom port.
"The first two levels of Doom II ported to SNES," says Sunlitspace542. "No other content from Doom II has been ported. This hack only uses the assets already available in the game (except for the levels, title screen, and intermission background, of course). Big thanks to Randy Linden for programming Doom for SNES, and releasing the source code! This would not have been possible without his hard work."

Wow, i am on vacations right now, but as i love the Super Nintendo AND Doom, this is a No Brainer to throw on my SD2SNES or Mister.
Hope we will see it appear on the chinese Market
Edit: When it is fully redone
Ah man such conflicting feelings on the snes port. when it came out the only real exposure i had to doom was doom 2 on a neighbours computer. They didn't even have a soundcard. BFG sounded hilarious. Anyway eventually i found out it was coming to snes and leapt at getting it. Surely the mighty super FX chip can deliver? Well sorta. I see those limitations more now these days but my teenage eyes didn't so much. I enjoyed it but the lack of cheats and bad controls made it a hard to love version. In the end a playstation came along with its excellent port and then the pc. Funny enough this is why i also seem to have DOOM on EVERYTHING.
@MysticWangForce I have both the SNES and PS1 (oh…and the 32X) ports and I know what you mean! Good fun but wow does the SNES drag. Very impressive for the hardware though 👍
@Blast16 totally forgot 32x had one too. That did irk me back in the console warz days haha. Not one bit now. Glad mega drive owners got to have some fun too. And lets be fair getting it to even run on either platform? chefs kiss
It's not as epic as the 3DO port like haha.
And all of those versions were based on the Jag port.
Cause that was the first console port for some reason, and fairly stripped back.
The 3do Doom ...exists, that's the nicest thing i can say about it.
Least the SNES port tries and runs on ancient hardware even for 1993.
The 3do should have been able to handle Doom.
Well, it's a nice start.
Will be interesting to see how far they can take this, and also just to see if they're able to optimize and improve the base game furhter too.
I think the SNES def has more to give here.
@MysticWangForce Yeah, for me, PlayStation Doom is still my favourite version of the game. The Aubrey Hodges soundscape just makes it something different from the PC and other versions, and it's more "Doom" than any other version imo. Also, even though mouse and keyboard is the way to go now, that PS1 control scheme really delivered. A great version of the game for its time, and one that still absolutely holds up today too.
@KitsuneNight
The Super Nintendo Version actually don't has the turned down Levels and is running on its own Engine written by Randy Linden.
But yes, most of the others took the turned down Levels, even the GBA Version.
Most of them are missing the Cyber Demon.
To the SNES Version itself, it is a shame that only the japanese one has Difficulty Setup on later Episodes.
But there is a Patch for Pal and US Versions
Imo it is playable, have seen way worse Games.
Edit: Oh and the Music sounds great on the SNES!
@Azuris
If I am honest the thing that always put me off the Snes version of Doom, was the lack of a save game ability.
Not even a password.
Doom isn't a game you finish in a single setting.
@KitsuneNight Totally, it’s why I’ve never attempted to get very far in it. Plus if you die, you restart the level with nothing but the handgun. 😩 I’d be very happy to try and beat it if there was some way of saving my progress.
I wonder if they could port the Doom 64 levels to the SNES…? 😆
@BulkSlash
oh yes, thats also an Issue.
Passwords as in Wolfenstein 3D would have been at least one Solution.
@KitsuneNight
I guess sadly not, as Doom 64 did enhance the original Engine and allowed Rooms over Rooms.
Well, at least completly.
But maybe someone very ambitious could do a demaster, with new Sprites etc.
Just look at Doom 4
https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/108725-doom-4-vanilla-v32/
As People also reworked the Mega Drive Version, everything is possible
@Azuris
Think you got the replies for BulkSlash and me mixed up.
But no worries.
Passwords would have at least been something
At least there are save states around these days, but that doesn't help on real hardware or with fakerdrives*.
( * everdrive clones)
@MysticWangForce I hear you with the console wars haha. I didn’t have a 32X until about 10 years ago but I do enjoy Doom on it. I hear the Jaguar has an excellent port too!
@Blast16
Atari Doom was coded by Carmack himself. ( the engine at least )
And stripped down to work on a console
Almost all the other console ports are based on that one
3DO, GBA, Playstation and 32X are all derived from it.
It's less a port and a new master version
Stop skeletons from fighting has a decent set of vids about it

@KitsuneNight thanks for the info, I’ll check these videos out soon! 👍
@Azuris to clarify this, Doom 64 couldn't handle room-over-room. It used some super clever macros that triggered based on your position in some maps to change the floor position of select sectors to pull off the illusion, but that is doable in stock Doom.
I loved SNES Doom back in the day. Despite its limitations it was the only way I could play Doom and I didn’t really mind anyway. I completed the whole thing, finding every secret (with the odd help from a guide). Even playing it today my muscle memory kicks in and I can play it no problem.
It was actually the most complete version of Doom 1 on console back then, having more of the maps than the other versions, even more than the PlayStation version as far as the first 3 episodes of Doom 1 are concerned. Obviously the PS1 version had more levels overall but that included episode 4 and Doom 2.
I’d love to try Doom 2 on the SNES. Does this play on real hardware via the SD2SNES?
