South Yemen

also Southern Yemen
A former country of southwest Asia on the Arabian Peninsula. A British protectorate after 1886, it became fully independent in 1967 and united with North Yemen in 1990 to form the new country of Yemen.

To solidify their presence, British occupation struck deals with the heads of the various sultanates, sheikhdoms, and emirates that constituted the Federation of South Arabia and the neighbouring Protectorate of South Arabia.
In January 1963, in response to growing nationalist unrest in the region, the British persuaded the sheikhdoms of the Aden Protectorates to merge with the Colony of Aden and form the Federation of South Arabia (FSA).
Years of trades union and political conflict had preceded the events of 1962, and, a day before the 26 September revolution in the North, the South Arabian rulers had agreed to form a Federation of South Arabia, joining the colony of Aden to the 17 Western Arabian and three East Arabian Sultanates and Emirates.
