(bə-nät′, bä′nät′) A historical region of southeast-central Europe extending across western Romania, northeast Serbia, and southern Hungary. Formerly an ethnically mixed province of the Habsburg empire, it was partitioned with the breakup of Austria-Hungary in 1918.
