What is the Haunted Instruments Mod?

Blood, haunting and phantasm thematic excuses for custom VFX, spells, textures and glowmaps.
Here's a headline summary of what's included in this mod:

Shouldn't This Mod Be Titled "Haunted Violin"?
I did deliberate over it for about 30 seconds. However, this mod also includes Instrument Varnish (see next subheading), which you can apply to any vanilla or custom instrument model. Once you have installed this mod, you can choose to "haunt" any instrument you like. I may also add some haunted-themed VFX and glowmap support for other instruments in future updates.

Optional Instrument Varnishes
Two varnishes are included in the chest if you have a favourite instrument you would like to make work with this mod, instead of the included violins. The varnishes are very straightforward to use. Just equip the instrument and Use the varnish. It will work on any vanilla or custom instrument from another mod.

n.b. I was getting mod dev fatigue by this point and I have not updated the sound effect for using varnishes. It makes a noise like you are glugging it. Obviously I do not condone drinking varnish, so uh, just pretend you can't hear that. I'll probably update the sound fx at some point. Probably.

Dependencies
This mod is an add-on for Ember's Lute. Ember's Lute is music performance enhancement mod, and is a required dependency as it contains the music framework and the VFX datafiles and resources used by Haunted Instruments.

A Quick Note on Compatibility
This mod does not change the vanilla music performances. Its custom music performances, instrument toggles and spell effects are only triggered when you either equip one of its instruments, or use the instrument varnishes. It's just a design approach and there are pros and cons. Pro is it should be compatible with most other mods, and happily co-exist alongside other music mods. Con, music performance functionality added by another music mod will probably not work on the custom instruments in this mod (but should be fine with vanilla instruments).

Trader Locations

  • Act 1 - the halfing by the entrance to the druid and tiefling den
  • Act 2 - the harper quarter master at the Last Light Inn
  • Act 3 - the Chromatic Scale store

All Ember's Lute items will appear on vendors inside an Ember's Lute treasure chest. If you cannot see this chest on one of the above vendors, take a long rest and try again. If you have the Tutorial Chest Summoning mod, you can also find the Embers' Lute chest inside the cartilaginous chest.

Recommended Mods
These are a couple of mods I have in my load order which I love and found to be complementary.

Crucible-Axe-Guitar by HeadBangingDead
The version of the guitar with the glowmap works well with the VFX in this mod. Thanks to HeadBangingDead for letting me use their Crucible Guitar mod as an example of this mod plus a custom instrument mod:

Stay still in camp and play idle animations everywhere by Alithea Ancunin and SatanModding
I had a bit of fun pairing the idle animations while toggling the music VFX on/off (equip the Pants of Dramatic Eruptions) on various companions. Works best at night-time or in darker environments. I caught this screenshot of Shadowheart while messing about in camp with the idle anims and the VFX toggles.

Mods that disable continuous VFX
I find some of the continuous VFX in game can get in the way of spell casting and other VFX with superfluous lighting. If you search Nexus, you'll find a few mods that disable some of the worst culprits like Temporary HP. I use this one by Robogena.

Common Issues
See the sticky post for a couple of things to be aware of, such as interrupted music performances. More to do with musical performances and instruments in general than this mod specifically.

Installing and Uninstalling
Check the sticky post. Installation is standard and this mod can be added at any point in your campaign. Uninstallation mid-campaign is possible, but does have pre-requisite steps in-game to erase the custom items.
