Boss Overview
Black King is the third and final boss in The Parlor wing of the One Night in Karazhan adventure.
- Hero Power: Cheat
Pro Tips and Strategy
- You won't need to build a deck for this fight but you must make valuable plays against the Black King as unlike normal difficulty, you can't Discover new chess pieces.
- Positioning is the main component to this fight.
- He can use his hero power to cheat which gets rid of your left-most minion. Keep your Pawns to the left.
- You want to avoid having minions directly across from his when attacking, you want your minions to be between his so that they will attack twice.
- You can rearrange your own minions through Castle. Useful to move healers around and target specific minions.
- If Black Queen comes into play you want to make it a priority target.
- Black Bishop is secondary on the priority list. Letting it heal for too long will result in sad times.
- White Queen is an absolute monster. Use her to clear the board easily. Protect the Queen - you only get one!
- White Knight is awesome. It is the only minion that you can choose where it attacks regardless of its position. Keep it away from the left side of the board at all costs and use it to make effective trades.
- White Bishop is your source of healing. Keeping your White Knight and White Queen healed will help assert dominance. You can later use your hero power to move this over to other minions which require aid.
- White Pawn is your primary mulligan target. They will protect your better minions and are playable at any point in the game thanks to their mana cost of 1.
Rewards

They must have updated the AI since this guide, because even with that combo, it's a no-go. He always destroys the left minion on turn 2.
Pixywing, You da real MVP! Thanks.
In the last two days I've played this boss around 30-40 times. The only thing that changed the time I FINALLY won?
He didn't use his hero power a single time the entire game.
Just that one game, and that was all I needed.
Bug? Intended? Wtf?
Yay, 50 trys and I got it, Huray. Thank all for the stratigy
Getting optimal queen value is key to victory. Keep that in mind lads.
This is virtually impossible now. In order to beat him, you have to be at least 2 minions up on him pretty much all the time, which wouldn't be a problem, except once you hit turns 4-5 he'll just start sniping whatever is on the left. Once he's up on you by one minion, and you don't have two in your hand that you can play on the very next turn, you may as well restart. It ain't happening.
As an aside, I'd love to challenge ANY Blizzard Hearthstone employee to beat this, on Heroic, and record the match, along with the number of attempts it took. I'd be very curious to see what the result is.
No longer true, fortunately. Beat it first attempt last night.

Holy crap this literally changed my game. I have been doing this for the past day and a half and failed it so many times. The Pawn turn one and then 2 pawn turn 2 helped, but always left me with about 4-5 damage left. (This may just be my own bad luck.) This quote really helped me get it through first try though.
"You will always go first so you should pass your first turn so that you get full value out of your first Pawn. In the early game, you will generally not have to worry about the Cheat Hero Power because the Black King will always be playing minions which doesn’t give him enough mana to utilize it."
You should play your pawn turn 1 to get max value out of it (1 extra damage) as well your turn 2 is now better as you have 3 pawns smashing into their two and proceed to tempo them out of the game.

First try....thanks for the tip :)
I remember I tried this one in heroic because it didn't need a custom deck. I managed to somehow win first try and I never even noticed I only had 15 cards in my deck once I started fatiguing.
that was pretty hard, but the trick is you need always 1 more or less to get the most hit value! :D
GGGHHHhheeeaaaaahhhh finally. I followed Pixywing's advice (listed in comments below), but honestly, the only reason I beat it (10th try maybe??) was because Black King drew only pawns for the first 4-5 turns and I wiped the floor with him. RNG BABY. In all my failed attempts he drew multiple bishops, rooks, and knights and crushed me. May the RNG be with you.
This boss is fucking impossible in Heroic. I hate this game so much. RNG RNG RNG RNG RNG fuuuuuuu
46 tries but got it!
I really liked the other unique missions from LoE, and this one was a lot of fun on normal, but on Heroic, it was one of the most frustrating I ever played. It's a lot worse than others where you build your own deck because at least then you can try a different strategy, but here it is almost entirely luck. Not fun at all...
42 tries and still i can't win. Worst heroic boss ever.
I killed other bosses with 1-2 tries (except the last one), but i can't defeat The Black King boss.
I'm giving up.
Got it on the second try. Thanks mate.
I did like that too.
If I can give another advice to "finish"
I put the Queen on the right but I placed my Rook near the left.
So I can swap it and deal 6 dmg to rush him
