The mystery was weak, simple and boring, tbh I skimmed through some of the chapters, because it just dragged on and on and on, the story was repetitive and I couldn't start caring about any of the characters. Frank as a MC and narrator was a huge disaster. I just wanted to punch him in the face most of the time (like every time he condescendly called a woman a "sweetheart" or "babe" or acted as if he were the smartest person in the whole world... give me a break). What a stupid wanker....more

The main problem with it is that it's written as if it were a collection of transcripts from interviews. It just doesn't work. There's a reason why most of biographies are written as if they were novels, with normal dialogues and narration straight out of fiction (I hope you know what I mean). It wouldn't be so bad if the actual story was great, but it was sooooo boring, repetitive and just... ugh. Who would've thought a novel about 70s rock band would be so bland and predictive. And that big revelation that didn't change anything in the story? Come on, it was just bad....more

Some chapters were great, engaging and filled with funny dialogue, but others were simply boring and they dragged on and on and on... Especially the ending which was going on for about a hundred pages.
The main plot is build on the fact that the reader knows more than the characters and I absolutely hate it. I stopped caring about this whole thing about halfway through it and it became simply tiresome. And all those coincidences? I have nothing against using a coincidence in a plot, but when it happens about fifteen times in a single book... Just stop it. It's laughable.
I wouldn't say it's definitely a bad book, as I enjoyed it from time to time, but I really don't understand all those rave reviews....more

WHAT A STORY.
I must admit I didn't like it at first. The story dragged on, I had absolutely no idea where it was going and there were about a million characters that I couldn't start caring about, but about 45% in it all changed (and I read the rest in one sitting). And looking back at those chapters I'd found boring at the time of reading I see now their importance (building the characters in a way reader then would understand their actions and behaviour, showing Beartown as a specific community and how it would act if something unexpected happened).

Za dużo w niej było opisywania, a za mało pokazywania, co zawsze jest dla mnie sporym minusem (piszę tak już o drugiej polskiej książce ostatnio, co się dzieje? ;)). Daję więc neutralne trzy gwiazdki....more

Póki wszystko było tajemnicą, czytało mi się "Toń" bardzo dobrze, bo byłam ciekawa, o co właściwie tu chodzi, ale kiedy już wszystko stało się jasne straciłam zainteresowanie. Jakoś to wyszło zbyt prosto, zbyt nudno. Plot twisty też mnie nie przekonały. Bardziej mnie rozśmieszyły niż zadziwiły. Humor bardzo nierówny: czasem się zaśmiałam, ale często wydawał mi się dość żenujący....more

This case was less interesting and sometimes I was bored. And I don't like that the author treats readers like they're dumb, explaining every obvious thing and repeating five times the same info, just to be sure that everyone understands what's going on. It's not that complicated and there's no need to do this. It's annoying....more
'The Gustav Sonata' is as melancholic as it can get, full of sorrow and characters hard to like. Seems like a perfect read for me, but unfortunately i'The Gustav Sonata' is as melancholic as it can get, full of sorrow and characters hard to like. Seems like a perfect read for me, but unfortunately it wasn't.
The book is divided en three parts; the first one, about the sad childhood of Gustav, was great, the second one was okay and the final one was a mistake. I found it hard to believe the motivations of the characters, they all were behaving very unnatural to me. The story didn't have anything that would make it interesting and to be honest I didn't stop reading just because I loved the first part and hoped the ending would be great too. It wasn't. It lacked emotional depth, some events described were just random, not important at all to the story and the characters became the caricatures of themselves. ...more

I rarely read thriller books, but even I was able to notice that 'Bonfire' relies on recycled cliches of the genre, the plot twists are obvious and the main character written very badly. Seriously, I even liked Abbey, with all her imperfections, but she's erratic, jumps to conlusions and for a person that doesn't trust anyone is surprisingly gullible.
There are two cases to solve, one, actual, about a environmental violation, which is painstakingly boring; the second, involving the disappearance of Abbey's childhood friend and then enemy, actually got me interested, but the outcome was obvious. The ending is rushed and schematic, nothing memorable. ...more

Sometimes the dialogues were off, just poorly written. And all of the conversations about feelings, romance etc. were very cringe-worthy. It's the only Irving Stone book that I've read so I have no idea if he can't write this type of dialogue or just in this book this element is off.
I wish the last part, about Vincent's stay in Auvers, were longer and more detailed (for example showing Vincent's relationships with other people than Gachet), because it looks like Stone wanted to finish the book as soon as possible and the result is that I couldn't believe in the final breakdown of Van Gogh. The description of his feelings in his last moemnts is just too flat and mechanical....more

So, about that. (view spoiler)[The decision of not giving the readers answers about the case from the past, the one much more interesting than the new one, for me is hugely disappointing. I've read the author's explanation, but to be honest it doesn't seem right to me. I'd understand it if it were a book about entirely something else and the trauma from the past were just a thing looming over the mc, never to be solved or explained. But it's a crime book, we get possible leads on this one and leaving it unsolved is simply cruel. I feel like the author just couldn't think of a good explanation, so she left it like that. Other than that, I loved the writing style and it got me hooked, I read it in three days, I think, it was so absorbing....more
