Życie Gombrowicza okazuje się (co mnie zaskoczyło) dość nudne, a on sam (co zaskoczyło już mnie o wiele mniej) zadufanym w sobie nieinteresującym bucem, ale tym, co sprawia, że tę książkę czyta się świetnie, nie jest osoba pisarza, tylko wszystko inne: cała otoczka literackiego życia w przedwojennej Polsce, historia, która dzieje się obok Gombrowicza opisy zwyczajów... To kopalnia wiedzy na temat historii tamtych czasów, a do tego jest świetnie napisana. Myślałam, że będę się męczyć z tą kobyłą (która ma przecież jeszcze drugą, równie imponującą rozmiarami, część), ale pochłonęłam ją w kilka dni, co jest chyba najlepszą rekomendacją....more

Maybe she did it to distance herself from the fraud. Because not once she acknowledges that she IS a fraud. Apparently she just works for one. And I don't buy it, because after all she was faking all of it.
Anyway, the book was easy to read, sometimes even funny, and I'd like to see it as a TV series, something like Mozart in the Jungle....more

As I've already mentioned during reading, the world needs a proper Cleopatra biopic. And this book would be a perfect source material for the script.

I remember very little about the ancient history, because the last time I was in contact with it was about eight or nine years ago, but 'Cleopatra: A Life' is written so good I wasn't feeling lost in this labyrinth of dates, events and emperors. So if that's your concern, don't worry, it's all explained. At beginning it felt a little chaotic, but then it all clears up.
The author does a good job while relying on a limited and not often trustworthy source material, giving us of course not complete, but a better image of Cleopatra than we know from Hollywood or Shakespeare. ...more
