A great ending to a very good series. The second book was a little frustrating to me and I'm glad this one was much, much better. It made me like 4,5.

I just hate it when the main character in historical fiction seems like they've travelled from XXI ceAn interesting idea, but somewhat poor delivery.
I just hate it when the main character in historical fiction seems like they've travelled from XXI century using a time machine, and unfortunately Jane is painfully contemporary. It just doesn't work. Other characters are boring and the plot is nothing special (but I have to admit there were chapters I enjoyed and were fun to read)....more

Not perfect, but definitely better than the first one. The story is more interesting and it stops being so black and white, it's more morally ambiguous. I just wish that the secondary characters would have more depth, because right now you can see they're just words on paper and not like real people....more

Complicated, flawed, but at the same time likeable, characters (save Mehmed, (view spoiler)[oh how I wished he'd die at the end, the 2/3 of the book of whining about him by both of the main characters was just too much (hide spoiler)]), interesting plot (but it could be a little more complicated, I wouldn't complain) and good writing.
But I don't know why it's marked as fantasy, because it's not, it's just historical fiction for me....more

"The Mechanical" disappointed me a little. It has a great premise and this whole idea of enslaved machines is well thought out (although repetitive - how many books had been written about this?), but it's just not that enjoyable. The characters are well written, but don't have something which would make them great characters.
There's not enough background: for example, why New France is the only one nation which have resisted? There's not enough information on the resistance, on the history, on the way that the society works... Maybe more will be revealed in the next book of the series, but that's not excuse, "The Mechanical" seems just one dimensional. I don't know if I want to come back to this world....more
I love war stories, but always there are not enough women in them. Which is understandable in most cases, but still... "Front Lines" is THAT WAS GOOD.

There were a few little things that were annoying, but overall I loved the characters, the gripping story and the realism. Can't wait to read the next book....more
