Therese is one of the most irritating main characters I've ever encountered, her creepy obsession with Carol was unnerving. And Carol is like a ghost, she's written sluggishly, she doesn't feel real. I also don't believe in their relationship, because what is shown doesn't reflect what the narrator says. At first I thought it's what it's supposed to be, a story about a young, naive girl who develops feelings for a person she doesn't even know at all - it would explain the idolization of Carol (and her lack of character) - but (view spoiler)[at the end it seems that they love eachother. Really? No, thanks. (hide spoiler)]
I don't understand how people nowadays can see the ending as (view spoiler)[ a happy one. Perhaps at the time it was written it was a happy ending, because of what stories about lgbt people had looked back then, but now? Carol is a wrecked woman. or me it's not a happy ending. (hide spoiler)]
