Obsidian is black volcanic glass. Finding it unlocks the tool shelf upgrade for the workbench and several different kinds of elemental arrows.

Obsidian deposit
Obsidian occurs in boulder-like deposits on the slopes of Mountains. It is more likely to be found on the higher slopes. Obsidian deposits require an iron pickaxe or better to mine. The glass-like deposits shatter when struck and so are best harvested from the low side, to avoid losing any shards.
Alternatively, obsidian can sometimes be found inside loot chests inside frost caves, which are also located in mountain biomes.
Unlike metal and metal ores, obsidian can be taken through portals.
