obsolete To die. A "chip" here is a gambling counter, as used in poker. It's incredibly tragic that so many men had to hand in their chips during the war. You better slow down on that horse, unless you plan on handing in your chips early! A: "Why did I think Edward had already handed in his chips?" B: "Probably because he's about 100 years old?"
