To get oneself into a difficult, undesirable, or disadvantageous position. Boy, I really dug myself into a hole by procrastinating on this paper until the last minute. My little brother always manages to dig himself into a hole with the police, and then I've got to go bail him out! We made a few bad investments last year and dug ourselves into quite a financial hole.
