bush leaguer

slang A reference to minor league baseball, in which some teams played on unkempt fields bordered by bushes, or in rural, "bush" towns.
1. An amateur or unskilled baseball player. Why they signed a bush leaguer like Thompson is a mystery to me. There's dozen other pitchers out there better than him! You think I'm a bush leaguer? Well, pitch me the ball and let's find out! A: "How did that bush leaguer hit a home run against our best pitcher?" B: "I don't know, but I'm sure it'll be his first and his last."
2. Someone who performs at an amateur, inferior, or incompetent level. You'll need to start doing some really impressive work if you want to prove you're not a bush leaguer. Well, it's no surprise the event turned into chaos when you hired that bush leaguer to coordinate it. If he put that bush leaguer in charge of the department while I'm out on maternity leave, then good luck to you all!
