digital twin

(1) A digital representation of a person. A digital twin is more realistic than an avatar, which is typically a cartoon-like character. See avatar.

(2) A digital representation of a real-world object. For example, a computer-aided design (CAD) drawing of a part or product is its digital twin. See CAD.

(3) A real-time representation of an industrial device. A digital twin is more than just a control panel that monitors a sensor or machine. It is a graphical replica of the specific device as it is performing in real time, and adjustments can be simulated on the twin to determine their effect before they are implemented in the field. See IoT.
