System requirements: Zen 3 or better: 8GB GPU: Medium preset @ 2k 60fps RTX 3080 12GB: Medium preset @ 4k 60fps RTX 4090 : I have pushed the engine to the brink of failure but unlike DOOM 3 I have retained RLE compression (determined if viable per asset) for the Ampere Optimized version since it has more textures to upscale than DOOM 3. This was done to help the game be more graphically pushed to the limit competitive with its other id tech 4 siblings. Prey 2006 being in a league its own because it supports a more modern compression technology that also actually allows higher resolution. Several of the faces were very poor after being upscaled and the game required some degree of human intervention beyond the AI.

See the Prey 2006 Remake project in my mod listings. I paused development for this one because I was nowhere near close to exploiting its potential. Whats available here is useable but its garbage by what I can do today with id Tech 4. I will move to Quake 4 after Prey completes.

I discovered a dormant esoteric capability John Carmack probably himself programmed into the engine, and im fully leveraging it with extremely custom work and Artificial Intelligence, which without would have otherwise made it not a very useful feature. But it basically allows me to reverse engineer texture streaming with the caveat its a female dog to actually manually bake into every level into every surface texture and shader but its also more CPU efficient than the modern solution. His engine also supports up to 6 compression formats. Eventually im going to patch the engine to use modernized versions of some of these formats.

What this game engine supports out of the box:
JPG, TGA RLE, DXT1, DXT3, DXT5, RXGB DXT5

What I intend to shunt into its capabilities:
JPEG XL, TGA RLE, PNG, DXT1, DXT3, DXT5, 3Dc

What the mod here to download uses:
TGA with RLE when it makes sense (sometimes it doesnt)

At the time I barely had a clue how to make mods for id Tech 4. Now ive almost completely mastered how to optimize the engine to the point its relevant with a RTX 4090. Which is more obvious when you see the file size is 60GB+. The memory bandwidth resource can be pushed to the legit crashing point over 24GBs of vram if you are getting aggressive with image quality. Right now im in the optimization phase for the RTX 4090. I probably will finish right before the RTX 5000 series comes out. So people wont end up needing a flagship to run it. But I plan for it to scale to basically any hardware that is DX8 capable or better.

Friend of mine I invited to work on the project already found the way to port the newer JPEG library to the game since its not bundled with a new enough library to get newer superior formats working. Tried forcing it in hex and renaming extension to spoof game but I dont think that path will be fruitful. I just havent finished with maxing out the base game yet. Conversion should be rapid once that phase is complete. Quake 4 isnt getting done for at least a year and a half. Doing the full modernization workload in blender, and so on is not going to just magically appear out of nowhere. It might be 2 years into the future just because im also going to refactor every level in the game to better optimize for VR which is very sensitive to geometry count being its running from 2 perspectives at the same time which is hard to do in the first place. It will be the most optimized id Tech 4 title in the entire Universe when im done with Prey.
