They weren't taken over, they had bad luck for a while and ran out of money to keep the company going the way they wanted to, so they looked for alternative solutions. This was the best one available.

Too bad it never got a sequel. This was a really awesome game. It didn't sell well because it wasn't promoted enough in magazines and stuff. The only time i really heard about this was when i was reading pcgamer.
