GENTLE LOVE's Prescription for Sleep series – which kicked off in 2014 and includes albums based on Secret of Mana, Undertale and Celeste in its catalogue – is adding Yuzo Koshiro's sumptuous soundtrack to ActRaiser this month.
Prescription for Sleep: Heavenly Avatar is "a celebration of jazz and friendship with a tribute to Yuzo Koshiro’s soundtrack to ActRaiser to chill, relax, sleep, and study to," says publisher Scarlet Moon. "As one of Koshiro’s defining works, the score has been a longtime standout in his expansive catalogue."
GENTLE LOVE is comprised of Metal Gear Solid series composer Norihiko Hibino (saxophone) and Etrian Odyssey/PersonaQ performer AYAKI (piano). Koshiro and Hibino have previously collaborated on titles such as Etrian Odyssey, 7th Dragon, and WANGAN MIDNIGHT.
The track listing is as follows:
- Opening
- Sky Palace
- Advent
- Filmoa
- Blood Pool ~ Casandora
- Autos ~ Temple
- Pyramid ~ Marana
- North Wall
- Birth of the People
- Offering
- Peaceful World
- Music in Heaven (Original)
We're honoured to be able to present an exclusive sample, Birth of the People, below.
Koshiro had this to say about the release:
I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with Hibino-san for over a decade. What sets Heavenly Avatar apart is its jazz-infused tracklist—a departure from ActRaiser’s original orchestral compositions. I hope you find as much enjoyment in listening to this album as I have.
Scarlet Moon’s Jayson Napolitano adds:
Knowing about Hibino-san and Koshiro-san’s longstanding friendship, and loving Koshiro-san’s music over the years, I wanted to find a way for them to collaborate once more. We’re really pleased to celebrate ten years of the series with this album and hope fans of the series and the game enjoy it!
Prescription for Sleep: Heavenly Avatar is now available for pre-order on all digital storefronts and will release on May 17, 2024.

Never heard of them, but just looked them up on Spotify. Will definitely give this a listen. I'm a big fan of Lo-Fi video game music covers. Game Chops, Tune in with Chewie and Jokabi are some of my favourite artists on that front.
Actraiser, along with Herzog Zwei(Genesis/MD), Thunder Force AC(Arcade), Ninja Gaiden 2(NES) and Silver Surfer(NES), is one of my favorite game tracks OAT.
So i appreciate the selection.
Sweet sounds and thank you!
Very nice. I love Act Raiser and the soundtrack, so I'll give this a listen.
@Diogmites Massive respect for the Herzog Zwei love. Absolutely stunning soundtrack.
@Damo Herzog Zwei is my favorite Genesis/MegaDrive game, and the time i’ve spent in the menu screen listening to greats like that catchy opening, Jagd Flieger, and others such as Slight of Hand, Sniper and The Super Fighter Invigorated Us probably equals the time i’ve spent playing it. It’s masterful stuff!
Well that's kinda cool.
Outside of that, this game has some of the best quality music I've ever heard on SNES. Some of the very best of the 16-bit era actually imo.
I particularly love this tune: https://youtu.be/uaSzPReU2_E?si=h2lE2UJjisCHBEQP&t=79
Nice to see the ActRaiser music still getting some love.
@RetroGames An epic, atmospheric piece! I always liked Birth of The People, which i think was the standard peaceful, over-world map music(not to mention the song in the sample video).
I think the last stage track was another fave.
For me, Yuzo Koshiro’s Actraiser music stands along stuff like Super Metroid , Technosoft’s stuff, Streets of Rage 2 and FF6 and Chrono Trigger as the cream of-the-crop of 16-bit era tunes.
@Diogmites Yeah, totally agree. Those picks are right up there as some of the very best of the generation.
They do koshiro a lot I guess! Underrated musical genius
PENDANTIC NERD ALERT! INCOMING!
. . .
Paragraph 3: "is comprised of" is bad grammar. "Comprises" means "is composed of," you can get rid of your "is" and "of," Damien.
Anyhow, I'll definitely give this a listen when it comes out, but I usually find these projects no substitute for just listening to the OST, so likely I'll only give it one listen.
